SEE UPDATE BELOW AS PUB NO LONGER WHAT IT WAS This is a gem with a great reputation which is richly deserved. The menu is concise, but what they do, they do well. I had a lovely tender steak and the boss had in her words " a very very good" fish chowder. The beer was also well kept. The staff were friendly and attentive and warned us that we might have to wait an hour for our food. As it happened we received it in about 15 minutes. We walked here from Deal and would do so again. It's worth it. 2 years later we came back to find the pub redecorated a nd staffed by surly unsmiling youngsters. The beer was good but @ £6 a pint it ought to be. We both opted for Mediterranean Fish Stew (£20). This was cold and on a cold plate with zero presentation. Clearly had been under hot lamps in the pass for some time as the Gurnard and clams had dried out and the mussel shells had become so brittle that when removing the mussel the shell disintegrated into shards of sharp shell. Despite bring delicious it was spoilt by this inattention. Also served with sour dough bread that was toasted to inedibility. Felt let down and ripped off.

Visited recently while passing through Deal/Dover to pick up some camper parts for a build in memory of my dad. The gentleman I met recommended Zetland Arms — a quaint old pub right by the beach, with beautiful views and lovely coastal scenery. The location is charming, with outdoor benches both in the garden and right on the stony beach area — perfect spot on a nice day. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Inside, the pub is quite small and seating is a bit tight-knit, but it adds to the rustic charm. However, I was quite let down by the food, especially given the price. I paid £20 each for two fish and chips. The meal was presented like a school dinner: very small portions, frozen-style chips, and a standard piece of fish — nothing you wouldn’t get at your average local chippy for half the price. While it didn’t taste bad, it certainly didn’t justify the cost. All in all, a nice place to visit for the view and atmosphere, but I’d struggle to recommend it based on food quality and value for money. A solid 3 stars.

I am thoroughly disappointed with the way they treated me and my partner. We visited today around 3 pm during geave rain and asked for a table for two. The lady said there is a table so we sat there waiting for service. My partner went to the bar to get drinks but she was told to wait at the table. We sat without anyone acknowledging our presence for 25 min. New customers were coming and were served and we felt completely ignored. My partner said we should leave as she felt terrible. I am not sure but I have a feeling we have been ignored because of our accent (we are not English). Such a shame as we enjoyed our lovely walk and thought about a nice meal in the pub. In my opinion the staff present that time were absolutely unprofessional and looked stressed. I hope they learn 7 steps of successful customer service. I would not recommend that place.

The worst customer service ever in a pub! We were looking forward to returning to the ‘Zetland Arms’ at Kingsdown. They should get their website sorted out! At 10am their website appeared to take our booking, we tried calling them to confirm but it went straight to answerphone. No-one called us back. Having travelled two hours to get there with our young Grandsons, and having waited in the queue at the entrance, the older bar man instead of greeting us and asking if he could help us initially ignored us & then threw us a look as if to say “yes?” We should have walked out at that point but our Grandsons were thirsty and hungry. He took our drinks order but wouldn’t take our food order & told us to look for a table number, but he then completely ignored us and served the next customer who also didn’t have a table number but he took their food order! There was no table number on our table in their garden. Another bar assistant said it was table number 4. We queued again & when we told him the table number he then said they’re not accepting anymore food orders! This was at 1.30pm, their website says no food orders after 3pm. I asked politely if they could at least feed our hungry Grandchildren but they wouldn’t. Very poor that the chef couldn’t make the children some food! We’re extremely disappointed and disgusted by the older bar man’s bad service, contempt of customers, arrogance & rudeness! Actually he did us a favour as we went to the ‘Rising Sun’ just two minutes walk away and were greeted by warm, friendly & efficient staff, and their food was delicious! The Zealand Arms are definitely not...

I first came to this pub 2 years ago and really enjoyed it but this time the experience couldn't have been more different. What made it worse was I booked it for my birthday and had been bigging it up to my friends but it was a massive let down! It started off badly when the barman overcharged us for our drinks. No biggie these things happen but when my partner raised he initially didn't believe us which was awkward. One of the glasses had lipstick all over it but we didn't want to complain again.

When we sat down for our food the service was poor and unattentive and when the food came unfortunately it was not great at all. All of it lacked seasoning but my friends chicken pie was terrible and the sauce had completely split. She tried to eat it. Again it was my birthday and it doesn't create a great atmosphere to be complaining loads! But frankly the pie was inedible so she politely raised it and the waitress agreed it didn't look right. She said she'd speak to the chef, but she didnt come back. When I queried it at the end as the full price of the pie was still on the bill, she said her manager said they could only refund half because my friend had eaten 'half' (a couple of forkfulls isn't half) I've worked in hospitality for 9 years so I get how hard it is, especially when you think people are complaining for the sake of it, but today this was not the case at all. If they had just owned the mistake I wouldn't have written...
