A lovely place with the nicest staff and chef. I’m coeliac so needed to eat GF, they had lots of GF options on the menu and the staff were clued up on the fact that the griddle cooks sausages (which aren’t GF) so there could be cross contamination. This is always hugely appreciated. They ran out of GF bread (it was a particularly busy Saturday!) and the chef was so apologetic. Some people might be annoyed at this, but I was just grateful that they all knew their stuff, understood cross contamination and took it all seriously. I’d prefer honesty any day. Instead I had a delicious slice of GF carrot cake (baked separately, served with a clean cake slicer, stored in a separate cake box with a lid on the top shelf). All appreciated! Thank you team!

Very strange service, had to carry and ask for our own trays and there was confusing communication. Arrived at 4 pm but were told we had to sit outside as they were closing... in an hour! Also, their kitchen closes at 3pm despite them closing at 5pm- which if you're going for tea is quite disappointing! This isn't said on their menu/website. Limited gluten free options and overly sweet cake. Two different customers tripped on the steps outside so really needs clearer signage, perhaps a standing chalkboard or red tape. Lovely decoration and teacups etc but unfortunately won't be going back as the atmosphere just wasn't friendly. Really disappointing as it is so close to Jane Austen's House it could have been a lovely place to visit regularly.

The tea room was possessed of an uncommon charm, such as to delight both the eye and the spirit. The scones, delicate and most excellently prepared, afforded great satisfaction, while the attentions of the staff were marked by a civility both genuine and pleasing. The atmosphere invited a repose most agreeable, adorned as it was with a decor of singular prettiness. Though the bread accompanying the sandwich was found rather too firm for perfect enjoyment, the felicity of the experience, crowned by so delightful a scone, did entirely restore the balance and render the visit most gratifying.

Sadly, a disappointing visit today. I've been a few times, all of which were nice, however, not so great this time. On arrival, it's unclear as to whether you get seated or choose your own table, so we stood there awkwardly for a couple of minutes until we were told to choose 'anywhere'. This seemed rushed and not very welcoming. Being the fatty that I am, I ordered the large, cooked breakfast. I wasn't asked what kind of egg I wanted and was given scrambled. It wasn't too bad but not great either. Secondly, the menu says filter tea or coffee and juice included - I was offered neither. I did ask, but only for the juice as noone seemed interested in providing service. When I was given the juice, a bottle was just taken out of the fridge, lid left on, and placed on the table next to a glass; making me feel like I was being an inconvenience. The food was lovely, the tearoom is pretty, just a shame about today's service. My advice is to be more attentive to your customers and check the menus to see what they include. This was probably an exception/a one off so it's not like I wouldn't come back but I was a bit let down, especially as I was bringing a friend there for the first time, to show what it's like after raving about it. Also, a fork was dropped on my trousers, quite funny to me but might not have been for another customer. Also, I think someone said they'd never heard of Jasmine tea. Sorry to...

We were looking forward to this after a really nice time at Jane Austen’s house but to be honest it was a huge disappointment. The building nor the outdoor seating area is wheelchair accessible so we ordered to takeaway. Both hot chocolates were not very nice with a lot of undissolved chocolate powder at the bottom. The cakes were incredibly expensive for their size and distinctly average in taste - the so called brownies were so dry - a fundamental basic of brownies is to get a nice shell with a soft gooey centre. The biscoff flapjack was okay but the orange cup cake was tiny - surely for £3+ a normal size cupcake wouldn’t be too much to ask for!

As for the service it was slow and there was no real welcome or apology for the hideously slow service! I could have run to the supermarket, gone home and baked my own cakes in the time it took to get served.

All in all - if I’m ever in Chawton - I’ll be giving this place a miss! Over expensive, bad drinks, mediocre service, small portions for the price and distinctly...

It gets two stars because it was previously very good, so much so that we had been going for many years. This time we visited early April 2022 one Friday afternoon. There were no other customers in there and upon entering there was a scruffy teenage boy lounging on the counter eating a lollipop. His words were ‘go and sit anywhere over there and come and order when you want.’ He was too busy talking to his teenage girl friends to even want to serve us. A really disappointed show and unusual for here. This would have been a 3 or 4 star review because of the good previous experiences. However we wrote a courtesy email to the owner using the email address on their website, just to inform them of the poor first impression we received and how they could be losing customers, but we’ve had no reply! Ownership may have changed and we cannot see them being there in a few months if it stays like this, which is a shame as the setting and food has always been...
