We didn't stay We ate Lunch, why is Google so prescriptive?
Now, about the Lunch... I have worked in the Hospitality biz, on and off, since Adam was a boy, 1975 to be precise, and I have had an awful lot of experience of disappointing Sundays, both as a host and punter, you may imagine a sense of trepidation/ anticipation when booking for a Sunday Lunch at an unknown ( to me) venue.
Hassan is a master of his art, as evidenced by the very charming and competent team at the coalface today.
A Swift one? In fact a brace of Bowmans finest (personal opinion) to whet the appetite for what turns out to be a truly fab lunch, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
Super venue, lovely country pub, all that you would wish for when entertaining the Bidens. Good English setting at its best.
What a great menu, sardines AND lambs kidneys as starters? Where are my smelling salts...
I pose a rhetorical question as to the cuisson of the beef sirloin, and its batted back in a style to make young Emma really proud. Rarer than Hens teeth I reckon.
How soothing to have very good service alongside really delicious, locally sourced fare, cooked with attention to the smallest of detail. The parsley was finely chopped you know and the kidneys would have had the Devil begging for more.
How refreshing, and here, take note Jay Rayner, to find 6 white and 7 red wines offered by the glass and nothing on the extensive list above £40 the bottle!
The knighted beef came with a trireme of good gravy and hot horsereaddish, beautiful vegetables and a bouquet of real watercress. My goodness, what a fine Chef stalks the kitchens here at the Trooper Small suprise to find he trained with the clockmakers, possibly in Zurich?
I can honestly say that this is in my top 3 ever roast beef lunches, the other notables being Chewton Glen and Simpsons in the Strand.
All of the hard work the brigade put in at the Trooper today deserves fine reward and the highest accolade.
We left after coffee (sadly, no room for pudding!) very happy bunnies.
What great value...

It was such a great place with a warm welcome & a regular dining experience for us. The place was very quiet for Friday evening at 20.30 with no one eating! Unfortunately this evening after dining in Portsmouth where we had booked thankfully as it was so busy, we decided to stop off at the Trooper to look at the menu to book a family occasion. After the trip I needed the loo & as I know the place I went to go to toilet & left my husband to order the drinks. I could hear the barmaid saying to my husband where was I going to which he replied she needs the loo. Her reply was normally, people order drinks & ask first!!. After we sat down my husband said she wasn't very happy to which the bar person thumb signalled to my husband asking if everything was OK, then proceeded to call my husband a Tw*t infront of the whole bar. To say I was gobsmacked is an understatement!! We drank our drinks whilst she stood fuming behind the bar. We left not willing to return & certainly would...

Not a place if you dont drink alcohol apparently!! Asked for a non acholic beverage and was told I should not go to a pub if I didn't drink!! That would certainly narrow down my locations for eatery's in the UK. As we know the British love a pub!! My mates tried to order some Coffee martinis but told no. Not sure if owner just wanted to go home!!
The food was average. Friend had a steak which he said was ok. We ordered a section of starters most of which you could tell were frozen and chucked in fryer. Beetroot salad lacked seasoning not much care given. Could be so much better.
The staff that served us were a credit to the eastablishment. Friendly, courteous and happy.
Perfect spot for a pub lunch after a good walk in country side but...
