Wow! what a stunning little pub bursting with charm and history. I called in without booking a table after spending time watching the present day RAF Coningsby in action, as you walk in to this old world pub with it`s low ceilings and wooden beans you soon become aware of the memorabilia of Royal Air Force contained within, from the names written on the ceiling of crew members both past and present to the individual rooms with photos it soon becomes clear that during WW2 this pub became very popular with those stationed nearby. For me the most poignant thing was the pennies pressed into the beams by airmen placed there to pay for the next pint upon return from a mission, and sadly as we all know many of those brave young men never made it back home, this really bought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye. You could almost imagine the scene around 80 years ago of men drinking and raising a glass to comrades lost in action knowing full well it might well be there turn next. I ordered some food which arrived in no time at all a good portion and very tasty washed down with a pint of Spirit of Jane Pale Ale. The staff and service were great if you are ever in the area make sure to come and visit you will not regret it, just make sure to check the opening...

We visited twice, first for a quick drink and the second time was to eat. Food and drink was very good, even if the menu maybe a little limited for some. Staff were very friendly and pleasant on both occasions and happy to answer any questions asked about their establishment.
There is a strong WWII RAF theme that runs throughout this small pub, like many in the area and being in "Bomber County", with all walls covered with historic RAF photos. So if your are interested in the WWII RAF history of the area then its worth a visit.
In the bar area the ceiling is literally covered in signatures and inscriptions from pilots and aircrew, past and present, from both home and abroad. The famous ones being William of Wales and TV's Ewan McGregor along with his (ex) RAF pilot brother Colin McGregor.
If you don't leave the Bluebell with a stiff neck, then you obviously haven't been looking up!!!
Finally the coins in the beams: these were left by WWII aircrew to pay for drinks on their return from a mission. Its a sad reminder of these brave, heroic and often young men, that they didn't return and get to enjoy that after mission drink :(
If only the walls...
