Sadly only 3 stars this visit. The food was fantastic but sadly the visit was drastically let down by everything else. We were a party of 6. The venue was extremely busy which is good, but service & attitude of staff was not 4 or 5 star, whether this was affected by the volume of diners? We were sat by a door which was being used by staff taking food to an event in the marquee so was open a lot of time, at least after half an hour the hot air blower above the door was put on to help with the cold. Felt we were being rushed to order our food by the quite abrupt waitress. On asking what Soup of the Day was, her response: "I dunno, do you want me to go & ask?" - really? Dish offered on menu was GFA, on querying was this a Gluten Free option available, met with "I dunno" !! 1st rule of service Know Your Menu !! The body language on asking for her to check was a little to be desired. After we had ordered 1 of our party noticed the Chef Specials chalkboard, which had not been pointed out to any of us. Anyway.. food arrived. Presentation good. Plenty of it. 4 of us opted for Fish & Chips (generous portions I will add) 1 of which was GFA (difference was no curry sauce but no big deal) Waitress returned to clear and said pass the plates down - errr excuse me ? This was her stance of the evening. Positioning herself at the end and putting everything down there for our party to sort out the distribution. Not a huge problem but nonetheless it seemed like she couldn't be bothered. On ordering deserts, again waitress had no idea about the menu, in fact she called a colleague over to ask about the Chocolate Marquise, moreover on being asked what cheesecake of the day was - "do you want me to check?" once again knowledge of her service was poor. The lighting where we were sitting needs to be addressed. We had to use the torches on our phones to read the menus which probably explains why they couldn't see some cutlery that was on the floor from the previous sitting maybe. A little disappointed as we were there for a special occasion. Reasonable value for money. Bill was £180 for 6 mains, 2 starters, 4 deserts and a few drinks. On leaving my elderly mother spotted the deserts on the specials board and was upset that had she have known, she would have had the Lemon Meringue as that was her favourite.
Will go again but if the establishment can take away from this review : staff training that would...

The story: Thought to come here over the bankholiday after visiting the steam trains. Booked a table for 12:00 after the railway visit. Arrived at the pub (was practically empty inside one of the first to be seated for the lunch time serving) at 11:55. Drinks were taken promptly. We were there with 2 kids, 3year old and a 6 year old. 15 mins later drinks arrived then orders were taken. 50mins later I was asking about the starters, to which the staff promplty brought them out. 1hr 10 mins in I started asking about the main course after about 10 mins the waitress came back and said they lost our order. I appreciate it was the bank holiday, we were one of the first ones in the restaurant. There was plenty of opportunity for servers to come round and see that we were not served etc. This is the minimum I would expect from waiting staff in the role. As we were walking out I did a quick head count and there were about 8 waiters/waitressess milling about. When we asked about how could they loose an order the answer came back as "its the bank holiday" and now that we have to re order it would be "a long wait" for food... We cancelled the order and at that point paid and left.
So in all 1hr and 20 mins to have a starters and a glass of cola. To the point, had to leave hungry with hungry grumpy kids.
I would come back if it is just adults and we can afford to wait, with kids it makes it impossible to keep them entertained and they are hungry for that amount of time.
As I said. Shame because the starters were good and I can see this being a great place to dine as per...
Read moreWe have visited the halt for years on occasion and very rarely choose to eat out for a Sunday dinner. Unfortunately the food was just not very nice upon our visit today, we were waiting a very long time and had 2 children in tow, too. The cauliflower cheese came out first before any of the food (roast), 10 minutes later the adult mains arrived and in this time the cauliflower cheese had gone cold and again, we were waiting on the children's food.. when it eventually arrived they'd got the order completely wrong- bringing chicken instead of fish ( we do not eat chicken). Waitress had said we said chicken, none of us eat chicken so this is not possible. The manager offered to take the chicken off and replace it with fish- we are vegetarian so wouldn't want to eat from something that had just had chicken sitting on it. Eventually we all had our food in front of us and tried to start to enjoy the food and my daughter found not one but two hairs on her dinner embedded in the fish fingers. At this point we had quite simply just had enough. £105 later and none of us felt happy with the food. Young waitress seemed lovely and she tried her best but unfortunately got our order wrong. Manager stated she would take the kids meal off of the bill but hadn't informed the staff at the bar so we ended up paying it anyway. I really really hope this is a one off because this is so disappointing to leave feedback like this but unfortunately we wont be...
