We visited the chequers after we heard so many good things whilst on holiday it was our last night so we thought we go here, ( big mistake) 4 weeks ago! It was a Saturday night we were booked in for 8.30 , when we arrived we told where to sit we didn't feel very welcome, we were surprised the atmosphere was rather dull, we were put by a door, the waitress came over to take our order, as time was getting on and we were hungry myself and my son fancied the large fish and chips £16, sadly no mushy peas, my wife had the small fish and chips £11 . We waited a while then when the waiter brought the dishes out he said two small fish and chips, then he stuttered and oh no it's one large as it is on a large plate, but he looked confused well when he place the plated down, all three were the same size a small piece of fish 6 inch max same amount of chips and some dried peas. Rather than cause a scene it would of been more nicer of the chequers to say sorry we are out of the large fish rather than just dishing it out, we felt completely ripped off, £10 extra we paid for the same meal as the £11 serving, we then just asked for some mayonnaise for two of us and there was a wait for that too! We had already eaten probably half the meal . We were brought out a small ramekin between us. We were not approached to ask how the meal was, By this time we were fed up with the place, more upset really as it was our last night, I wish we had gone back to the dairyman daughter where we had an amazing meal the night before with a great atmosphere. We then wanted to pay our bill and there was no one behind the bar and no other staff in sight. So we just there waiting and waiting festering on our bad experience. Finally some one came from out the back we paid I bill and left. We will certainly be back to the Isle of wight such an amazing island, but we will certainly nit be returning to the chequers Inn, such a rip off, I am not sure what happened , I know everywhere has its off nights, maybe they a busy night and they were all tired by then still when your a customer paying there wages, customer is king! Not in this case they took us for fools , very sad chequers thanks for ruining our last meal out on...
Read moreBooked for Sunday lunch after seeing a lot of recommendations on social media.
It was a mixed bag. Drinks are hideously expensive, £7 for a pint of neck oil, £4.10 for a lemonade! I'm not sure if they inflate their prices for peak holiday season or what, but at £25 for a pint of neck oil, a lemonade, a bottle of Old Mout and two J20s, they're laughing.
The play area is fantastic.
The disabled toilets were grim but this was fed back to staff who said they'd deal with it.
Table and bar staff were lovely and friendly and helpful.
Man serving the carvery had clearly had enough and didn't want to be there. He was abrupt, bordering on rude, and not friendly at all. Barked at me and two people in front about using the wrong size plate even though the piles were mixed up. I picked up the smallest plate which was the same as the child's plate, yet was charged more even though I had the same amount on it!
Three of our four had a carvery. Again, pretty expensive and nothing to pick between carverys we've had at the likes of Greene King or Toby Carvery.
The beef was nicely done but cold, the gammon was rubbery. The turkey was nice. We didn't have the pork. Potatoes and veg were nice and a decent selection, however the Yorkshires, whilst a good size, tasted overdone. The gravy was really nice. The stuffing was in strange burger shaped disks and was chewy and bland. The nut roast tasted good but was an odd squishy texture. The child in our group had spaghetti bolognese which was nice.
Overall it did the job, but we wouldn't return, simply based on the fact the prices don't reflect quality, and the drinks being eyewatering (and the scary carvery man making you feel like a...
Read moreWe booked a table for eight for Sunday lunch and we were seated in the large back extension area.
It became immediately apparent that with the outside temperature being 5 degree outside that the double exit doors made it uncomfortable/ unacceptable for an enjoyable meal.
Whilst this was not fully within their control, it was further compounded by other customers repeatedly access the outside play area. ( 2 separate groups entering and leaving in excess of 12 times during the hour or so we were there.
We spoke to the staff and were offered 2 separate tables as replacement, which somewhat defeated the family birthday celebration.
At no time during our meal we’re we asked whether ‘everything was alright?’which was indicative of the level of service.
The repeated loss of ambient temperature through the doors was such that the Sunday roasts cooled quickly.
This is obviously a problem that regularly occurs during the cooler months, I decided to give some feed back to the management and asked to speak to manager or owner and was directed to the bar. I again asked to speak to the owner / manager and was told the owner had gone home. After about 5 minutes I again asked to speak to the manager and was told he would be ‘1minute’. After another 5 minutes it became apparent that I was being ignored.
I do not usually bother making adverse comments on reviews, but what could have been easily resolved was exacerbated by consistently poor service.
We shan’t be going there again, so I expect no reply...
