My husband and I had an early 6pm dinner at the Cross house tonight (Friday) and it was so so lovely.
First when we arrived and came in from the quiet dark cold outside we were welcomed with a lovely busy happy atmosphere in the bar.
We then come into the restaurant which was very nice not as load as the bar which we really liked so we could talk. And the tables were nicely spaced so you didn’t feel like everyone was listen to your conversation. Our first waitresses who was a lovely girl straight away made me feel very comfortable with the fact I am gluten free. Some restaurants can make you feel like your such an inconvenience but she was lovely and shared how she is gluten free too. It really made the world of difference for me.
There was a lot of choice on the menu and it said which options were gluten free available. We started with the bread olive and oil (gluten free bread) and it was delicious! My husband had the pie (not gluten free) and he said it was very nice! Although pastry a little thick in the corners of the pie. I had the calves liver which they did with sautéed potatoes instead of bubble and squeak (due to the gluten).
And for pudding there was a big choice and again things that I could have too which is rare in other restaurants. My husband had afforgato and had the Black Forest pavlova which was so delicious!!!
We came away feeling very well looked after, the staff were all so lovely and friendly, lovely atmosphere and food! And again the best restaurant I have been to so far as a gluten free. Hence the glowing reviews and mentioning gluten way too many times 😂 10 out of 10 all round! Might be my new...
Read moreI hadn't been to this pub for many years but having heard it had been extensively refurbished and opened again, went for a 'Friday girly lunch' with a friend of mine on 06/12/19. We booked a table in advance (for 12pm) and are glad we did because it was VERY busy. However, it was still a lovely venue for a relaxed get-together.
The interior looks fantastic following the refurbishment and the pub had a lovely vibe with friendly and welcoming staff members. I also liked the fact that it's spaciously laid out and we ate in the bar area where there was plenty of room and you're not sat on top of each other with the tables nicely positioned.
For our lunch my friend and I both ordered the 'Croque Monsieur' from the sandwiches menu and for £8.00 thought it represented great value as there was plenty of food on the plate. Now some people might balk at the idea of paying that for what is essentially a ham and cheese toastie but it was DELICIOUS!!! Thick sliced bread toasted to perfection with ham and cheese on the inside and grilled cheese oozing and bubbling all over the top - scrumptious! It came with french fries and a green salad and every morsel was devoured by both of us.
I highly recommend visiting either for a drink in front of the fire or to eat lunch or dinner - you won't be disappointed and I can't...
Read moreTasty food in a cosy pub, although, they need to sort their portion sizes as this doesn't reflect good value for money. When we were asked if our food was okay, I did mention to the waitress that the portions were tiny and I'm still hungry (we had a starter and main and I have an average appetite) who then suggested I have pudding. Erm, no! That's not the point and doesn't detract from the tiny portions we were served that would have been fit for a child. If we're already unhappy about the size, then we're also highly unlikely to spend more money to get another dish we can hardly see.
On the whole, service was good, but we decided not to tip. Two tiny starters and tiny mains, £68, we won't eat here again. Art is art, food is food, don't get the...
