I booked one of the camping pods. It was not clean food crumbs and feathers covering the floor also you cannot close the door from the outside. The area outside the pod had lots of cigarette ends littering the floor. The combined shower toilet room had lots of paint coming off the wall the bin was overflowing. The drain for the shower was a crack in tiled floor. There was a small amount of well watered down hand soap the hand washing sink was not very clean. Along the coast to coast path I met three people who asked me where I was going to stay that night they were hoping to camp at the bunk house but it had a private function. One of them ordered a pint on arrival and asked the landlord if he could have a pint of water first. The landlord charged him £9.50 the same price as 2 pints. He then went on to complain when we asked if we could charge our phones. When the other two walkers turned up he charged them £7.50 per person after quoting me £7.00 . The place was very empty only a half dozen or on a Saturday night. I know this pub has a lot of good reviews. But for me it felt hostile unfriendly...
Read moreUnexpected situations arose and extended my 3 week British holiday to over 4 months. Shap became my temporary home. I got to know Mark and Sharon very well. Can't say enough about the 2 of them, their regular patrons, or the friendly folks of Shap. A fine little village it is. The Crown Inn and those who frequent or pass thru it's doors on their countrywide walking journeys are all fine examples of those who enjoy small town relaxed country living. Camping, showers, parking, laundry services, fine home cooked meals, and a decent selection for all behind the bar. You can't go wrong passing through these doors. The people are welcoming, the food is good, preped on site and well priced, the bar finely stocked. Conversations open and comfortable. An all around fine representation of country living in rural England. I look forward to once again casting my shadow upon the door of Crown Inn and visiting with the many folks I met during my stay in this beautiful little...
Read moreWe just had the most delicious and wonderful lunch at The Crown Inn at Shap! They opened at noon and because we took a day away from walking the Coast to Coast (lots of rain!) we had time to relax over lunch. We visited with the proprietors while the coal fire was built in the fireplace and ordered homemade tomato soup (for me) and a ham and cheese omelette for my husband, and coffee for us both. Two hours passed (a total surprise!). It was about to storm again, so we closed our bill and walked to our B&B. What a great afternoon. Wonderful people, great homemade food (all of it!! Even the sausage!). They told us about how they invite campers walking the C2C to camp on their property, also. So nice!! Great wholesome, fresh food. Very friendly and full of authentic...
