After reading previous reviews and worrying about previous comments, I can honestly say our experience was far more relaxed and positive. Lovely location in a very quiet village. The weekend was fairly quiet even with nearly all the pitches taken. It wasn't rowdy, which if I'm honest I was expecting this from the comments, everyone seemed respectful on our stay. The pub food was amazing value for money and tasted really nice. If your looking for activities you will have to travel away from the campsite to the local towns, we travelled to Goole to the shops and free museum, good for young children. I think if your looking for a site just to relax, this would be the one and if you like to have a drink in the evening and a game of pool they have a small cosey pub on site. Showers are very nice and clean and to be honest the £1 per 2 minutes on the machine actually helps keep the queues down at the showers, not once did I need to queue and I showered every morning. It was a bank holiday weekend at the end of April, The Manager was present a lot over the weekend doing general maintenance on the site which definitely shows well as it seemed well kept when we stayed. I honestly wouldn't let the reviews put you off. It's worth at least experiencing once! If you have young children it may be best to bring more activities along with you as my daughter got a little bored but only because other campers went out for the day and she was alone, there is a small children's park for the kids though. I'd say that's the only thing missing is some daytime entertainment at the pub to bring everyone together. However the manager has his reasons for not opening during the day which is understandable. It may be a nice idea to open a small grocery shop on site? Not sure if this has been thought about but would be handy to be able to buy a few bits on site instead of driving out but again probably the cost that would be involved may put the owner off doing so. Again totally understandable. My mum came to stay in the little rooms with ensuites that have availability, which was nice and cosy. So if you have friends who won't camp, it's ideal for them to book a room instead! All in all it was a pleasant stay. We would definitely come back in the near future if we want a relaxing break. Also the pitch we camped on was very well sheltered and the manager said he usually puts tents in this area. On other sites we usually feel the wind on the tent slot but this site we barely felt the tent moving in higher winds because it's very well sheltered! Big bonus and good for first time campers who don't want...
Read moreLiked: Quiet site not too far away from Goole and Scunthorpe, 10 minutes drive to Goole and half an hour to Scunthorpe. There is a direct bus route to Goole, I can't comment on buses to Scunthorpe, purely due to lack of knowledge or research. Taxis will be readily avaliable mind you, or you can hop on the bus or taxi to Goole and jump on the train to Scunthorpe and surrounding areas. The site was good sized and was exactly as advertised. The toilets were clean and attended to daily and the shower block was spotless. I received an informative text upon booking fully outlining relevant information along with the pub opening times and events. The river Ouse runs parallel to the site and provides a lovely walking route. I had stupidly got myself into a muddy situation and managed to get the motorhome stuck in the grass - I had driven too far onto the field, whilst preparing to reverse into the pitch. I had contacted Andy and explained to him my cock up - Andy was happy to come and tow me out (sorry again!!). The pitch was level and I can imagine a good atmosphere at the site within season.
I was a solo traveler, stopping over for a couple of nights on my way back home after working away for a week - I didn't go into the pub as I still had food, etc left over from my week away and I was happy just to do nothing and chill. From what I can comment on, I look forward to returning again with family or friends and spending a night or to in the pub - hoping to tackle a carvery and the pub quiz on a Sunday. I will recommend the site to others the owner was extremely helpful, was easy to contact and speak to and everything was as expected.
I can't comment on Accommodation, Facilities/Activities (although facilities and activities are avaliable), Child friendliness (there is a swing park at the site for the kiddies) or WiFi - purely because they weren't utilised and I was a solo traveler.
Thanks again - I look forward to returning. A great local site for me to visit if I'm looking for a few days away...
Read moreRecent booked (via a friend) to stop at the Half Moon Inn on a bird watching trip to Bempton and Blacktoft. Being close to Blacktoft it seemed like a great place to stop and the reviews on Tripadvisor seemed to indicate it was a good place. On arrival we checked in - very friendly staff in the bar - and went to the rooms which are chalet style off the car park. First impressions were reasonable room, clean and tidy. Bathroom had a large shower which is always a plus point for me. On the negative side the rooms all have clear panel glass doors which face straight onto the main luggage and clothing hanging area, so it may be best to keep the curtain drawn at all times. ||||Returning to the bar for an evening meal which we had booked by phone on leaving Bempton. We found a well stocked bar and a good menu to choose from.We had a little wait to be seated in the restaurant but weren't in a particular rush. This was the major positive of the stay, the evening meal was excellent quality, hot and nicely served by friendly staff. For the evening meal I would give a 5* rating.||||Back to the accomodation, I personally found that the bed was extremely soft and low, both of which I struggle with.On going to shave the following morning I found that the bathroom was without mirror. When management were challenged with this the response was "It fell down on Friday, haven't replaced it yet". Now bear in mind there were six identical rooms and my friend and I were only taking two and we were the only guests, why put me in a room with a known defect. We were also under the impression that breakfast was part of the package, but were told as there were only two of us stopping that it wasn't worth calling the chef in to cook breakfast. ||||So to summarise if you want a nice evening meal - book a table and eat. However, I wouldn't...
