Ok this is another update, having not visited since the new management have taken over. I decided to give it another go. The place was brighter and airer than before, and staff were very attentive the drab and dreary pictures on the wall were gone hooray. You know what's coming next lol, we were guided to our table and asked what drinks we would like, with the statement " I shall get your drinks if your having a carvery I will let you know when you can go to the counter, yippee a carvery instead of a roast. The girl arrived with our drinks and stated the carvery was available if we would like to go up. Uh oh this is where it fell apart a bit the chef was there and stated " if you would like beef it will be another 30 minutes as we've just had a rush on" and she smiled saying we have this slice of beef if you want but all else we have is Turkey. My wife generously said " take the beef as I just want Turkey" so I did and moving along the counter I found there were no roast potato's! My wife asked if there were some coming and duly someone came from the kitchen with a fresh tray, imagine my surprise tho when trying to lift the roasties out if the tray they were crisp on top but mushy underneath. By now I was thinking of forgetting the whole idea, but as I was being moved along by wife I thought better lol. So now I'm heading for the cauliflower cheese ( which was the reason my wife wanted to go for ) ummm there was only a spoonful left. This time I let the wife ask to which she was told " we will get some out of the kitchen, can you imagine my wife's thoughts when they brought out a tray of CHEESY LEEKS! If you've read this far I thank you and I leave you to decide for yourself. Mine is this the food is good if its...
Read moreA great disappointment. We had a table booked for 10 for a family Christmas get together on the 22nd December 2024. Just before we left for the Halfway, a friend visited, mentioned we were on the way to the halfway, he said his family had also booked a family event there last year & had the window seats, no room to move. With only an hour before attending we had no time to check. Yep, we got the window seats. No room to move once your seated, no chance of going to the toilet, & with 2 highchairs & young children was a nightmare as the other tables wanted access to their tables, but yes, you guessed, our chairs & high chair was largely blocking the entrance to the window 'corridor', the tables are in area no wider than a corridor, i kid you not. My meal was a total disaster, i ordered fish & chips, the fish was not only over cooked, it was burnt, quite clearly been left in the fryer waaaay too long, & full of cooking oil [most likely redipped/reheated several times. Whilst i felt guilty not sending back as my wife advised, to be fair, the young girl server should have refused to serve it. We should have guessed what the food would be like because as you enter the Halfway its via a lobby which has the toilets & the smell of sewage is overwhelming! this is no 'hint' of a fart but full on sewage. I used the mens toilets part way through the several hours we were there & although the smell of sewage was still as strong in the lobby, the mens toilet smelled ok. On leaving, the smell had not abated one iota. Service was a little haphazard, in a word AVOID. All in all a disappointing & expensive lead lead to...
Read moreWe had planned to visit on a Wednesday or Sunday for a roast however didn't get round to it. We decided to go last Thursday evening and give it a try. There were clear notices as to what to do regarding covid safety. We were greeted by a friendly man who then showed us to a table, handed us menus and explained who our waitress was and that she would be with us soon to take our drinks order. We ordered water and a coke. We were given a large bottle of water with a glass, ice and lime. The man who delivered the drinks again was very friendly and polite. Our food order was taken quickly and the starters arrived very quickly too. The starters were lovely. Prawn cocktail with large, tasty prawns in a thick marie rose sauce on a bed of salad with sourdough bread and butter. The second starter was the southern fried crispy chicken strips with gravy. This was delicious. For mains we had Southern fried chicken platter - the chicken was tasty as was the gravy and onion rings. Nice chips. No BBQ beans were included though. The other meal was the hunter's chicken. A nice breast of chicken with bacon and cheese however, there was BBQ sauce.
Overall the food was absolutely delicious. The staff were all friendly and polite and working quickly. I wanted dessert but had no room so was able to take a dessert away. I had biscoff cheesecake with vanilla ice cream. OMG it was amazing!. I would have given 5 stars but dropped 1 star due to both main meals having a bit missing. Will definitely eat at the Halfway...
