We visited this pub whilst staying in a neighbouring village, we'd done our research online and had fairly high expectations as to the food/atmosphere. As recommended we booked a table (which wasn't really necessary).
Unfortunately we were very disappointed with the services provided by the pub. I'd say it was pretty standard "pub grub" (we weren't expecting gourmet!) however, the whole experience was far from satisfactory!
We'd ordered starters, one of our party members has opted for goats cheese and bruschetta, the 'bruschetta' was plastered in breakfast marmalade, it's not exactly a winning match. The main courses were equally as poor, it was slopped on a plate and wasn't pleasing to look at or taste, i'd go as far as to say I wouldn't have fed it to my dog. During our meal we were accompanied by a number of flies, when questioned the barman said 'we sprayed in there earlier'.
Now for service, equally as poor as the food, we weren't asked 'how was your food?' once. Also weren't asked for sauces or if we wanted more drinks.Though the bar staff seemed friendly they failed to make conversation with us.
The hare and hounds is definitely a local pub and hosts a wonderful beer garden, during our visit the resident dog was seen fouling in it! It would be a pleasant place to stop for an afternoon drink (if you can catch it open) however I WOULD NOT...
Read moreMy husband and I were on a day out with my 90yr old father-in-law We were en route to Charmouth from Sturminster Newton and wanted to find a dog-friendly pub on the way for lunch Not knowing this was possible we entered 'dog-friendly pub' into our google map and found the Hare and Hounds We didn't know the area and we were sort of taking a risk. And just trusted the reviews. Well, can't really describe the experience Walked into the small bar and the locals sitting there made us instantly feel at home Our recently adopted dog was completely welcomed in and given dog biscuits from a jar on the counter! 90 yr old dad was also happily welcomed It was a beautiful warm day and we sat outside Amazing views and huge garden space to explore with our dog Food was genuinely home-made Tasty - not fancy - not pretentious My cottage pie was just that - a very tasty cottage pie with vegetables It wasn't very busy - mainly locals - and most importantly the pub wasn't trying to be anything more than it was. No airs and graces Nothing flash and pretentious Just very real, friendly if you are friendly Check it out - pubs like this...
Read moreWe came across this pub while camping in the local area. When we arrived we were greeted by the owners (presumably a husband and wife) who, despite the pub being shut for lunch at the time, reopened the bar to serve me and my partner drinks. We felt bad for making them do this but they were very welcoming and hospitable.
We heard it was advisable to book for dinner, but we hadn't. They were really good and fitted us in though!
The food was lovely and arrived promptly. We both ordered from the vegetarian menu and it was really tasty and very reasonably priced.
It came to £58 for 5 pints and 2 mains.
The setting of the pub is magnificent - they have a huge outdoor area with a gentle view of a valley with rolling hills and the ridge opposite. Perfect spot for a cider on a...
