A warm, welcoming absolyre gem in the heart of the moor, the perfect pit stopfor a solo recharge half way through a long walk.
I stumbled across Hawnby Stores and Tea Room during a long solo walk through the North York Moors, and honestly, it was one of those unexpectedly perfect little stops that makes the whole day feel special. Tucked away in the charming village of Hawnby, this place is exactly what you hope to find when you're wandering off the beaten path.
I popped in for a quick bite and was greeted with a lovely, relaxed atmosphere (and such a helped and considerate owner!) . The tea room itself is cosy and inviting, with a real sense of care in everything they do. I had a heated sausage roll—crispy, golden pastry with a proper meaty filling and an americano that was smooth, rich, and just what I needed to perk me up. You can tell they use quality ingredients, and it turns out they actually sell the same coffee blend in the shop, which is such a nice touch.
Speaking of the shop, It was packed with a mix of essentials and local goodies, and I couldn’t resist picking up a few craft beers and some old-school sweets for the road. There’s something really thoughtful about how it’s all set out (old world) ; it feels like a love letter to Yorkshire and beyond, with a bit of everything you didn’t know you needed until you saw it.
Sally and Oli, the owners, clearly pour their hearts into the place, and it shows. Whether you're a local or just passing through, I’d absolutely recommend making the detour. It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special and I’ll definitely...
Read moreWhen you find a place in which every single element has been carefully considered and put together with total love and enthusiasm then you really want to keep it to yourself, but that would be doing the place a disservice. The Hawnby Stores and Tea Room includes a small village shop, stocking some home essentials (and various delicious essentials) plus takeaway drinks and cakes, the main tearoom, a snug, garden seating and possibly the nicest/cleanest toilet anywhere. I chose the honey glazed goats cheese on toast (their own, delicious homemade bread), served on a mixed leaf salad with beetroot, apple, walnut and rocket, drizzled with good balsamic vinegar, which was easily as good as anything I have ever tasted, fresh and light, sweet and fruity. The rest of the menu offers many other tempting delights of equally high standard for a variety of needs and tastes, including a soup of the day, bacon sandwich or simply a fantastic fresh coffee with a slice of cake. The cherry on top is joint owner and front of house, Oli, who is friendly and engaging and made us feel like family rather than first time visitors, and his enthusiasm for the enterprise positively glows. I must add, this is also a dog friendly place, inside and out. You need to detour onto the lanes of the moors to find it, but that is most definitely worth it. Not only will we return but we'd really like to live in that village so we can call...
Read moreA beautiful tea room and village store in the lower part of the village recently opened by Oli and the team. Car parking near the village hall. We called in for an early lunch and, after a warm welcome, thoroughly enjoyed a ploughman’s lunch with all its Yorkshire trimmings and homemade bread (the latter was by special request but has subsequently been made a permanent addition!). A substantial menu is available with hot and cold tasty treats and cakes if desired. Lovely outdoor seating is available in good weather and ideal for walkers and dogs, although the indoor tea room is dog friendly too. After our lunch, Oli showed us round the shop with its local produce and the, soon to be opened, beautifully refurbished “snug” area which has a log burner for the autumn and winter days ahead! A gem of a place in the North Yorkshire Moors well worth seeking out, can’t wait for...
