Highwayman Cafe — Restaurant in England

Me and my family stopped off at this cafe after reading the reviews we thought it’d be a lovely place to grab some lunch. We are a family of 6 + 1 toddler and we were refused to be seated together due to there being more than 6 of us even though covid rules state as long as you are with your bubble / support bubble you can exceed the rule of 6. The staff handled it terribly, we basically played musical chairs with the whole cafe. Terrible customer service. The staff seemed to have an issue with everyone that came through the door. Not sure if they were having a bad day but it definitely seemed that way! The staff were talking about us behind the counter and when I approached the situation the lady was nothing but rude and unhelpful. I understand we have to adhere to the covid rules however it was handled terribly. The service was extremely slow. We waited around an hour for a few sandwiches. There was also two ladies in the cafe with a pack of angel cards on the table. A staff member approached them and told them it was a rule in the cafe that no cards were allowed. She explained they were allowed to read a book or use a laptop but angel cards were strictly prohibited. To which I was absolutely appalled. They customers look extremely uncomfortable and were shocked at the comment made by the staff member. She stated the owner had told her this is a rule in the cafe, which we believe is a complete lie. I will not be returning and I highly recommend you avoid this cafe...

We've been visiting this cafe for 19 years up to 4 times a year and have to say we have seen a decline in quality. The produce was always top quality for years, the best breakfast in york. Sadly the quality has really gone off. The sausage tastes really cheap, years ago they were like Lincolnshire sausage...my favourite, not anymore. The bacon is always raw on the rind. Fresh cooked bacon shouldn't be cold from kitchen to table. One more moan...can't abide margarine. Who even uses that?? I remember when it was real butter, still should be for the price. Beans on toast £8 😱😱 In reply to your reply....I may have mistaken the price just for beans on toast as I had 2 slices of bacon, apologies for that. My bacon rind WAS raw , I took it off just before I had to return it because it was cold. I'm not slating your business, just giving an honest opinion of somewhere we've been going to...

Almost a scam

We stopped by for a cold sandwich and drink and immediately regretted it. You are better off grabbing a £3 sandwich from a fuel station rather than waste time and money here.

We asked for cold sandwiches, paid, then after sitting and waiting they came to say they ran out of fillings. I had to adjust my preference.

The egg mayo cold sandwich we asked for had no mayo in it! How inconsiderate does one have to be to do this. Plus, they served it in a thick burger bun! A sandwich is not a burger!

The cheese pickle sandwich was a joke. Thick burger bun, a cheddar cheese slice and some pickle jam.

Again, get a sandwich from a fuel station and it will be miles better. Such a waste of money and time and a waste of place serving ultra...
