Visited with the family yesterday evening for a meal while we're staying at the local Haven site. Really old building with a lot of character.
Walked in to a half empty venue to be asked if we had made a reservation. Confirmed to the lass behind the bar I tried ringing an hour earlier and there was no answer. She asked if I could ring again. Their phone wasn't ringing. We were then taken to a table.
My partner then went to the bar to order our food. I had 16oz rump with peppercorn sauce. Partner had BBQ burger. Big girl had double chicken BBQ burger. Small girl requested a mid week roast but with sausages. This wasn't on the menu. But the chef agreed to do this for her. So kudos for this.
In the meantime there was a barrage of fly's in the venue. There was another family sat opposite to us who kept wafting their arms around. And there were at least 4 that were flying around our table and drinks. Food arrived a short while later...
First things first. Good portion sizes all around! Homemade chips. And a decent portion of salad to go with.... My rump steak. The quality was poor. Really let down with it. It was cooked medium as requested, however the steak itself was of poor quality. Very little taste and tough. The peppercorn sauce was also very watery and not much flavour. Partner really enjoyed her burger. Girls enjoyed their food. But the sausages were like chippy sausages... A hidden gem here was the gravy that came with the roast.... Proper gravy! Definitely made with real meat juices. And like what my gran used to make on a Sunday. But again, my meal which was the most expensive was just poor quality.... The entire meal we were fighting off fly's which was spoiling the entire experience. We also never got asked if we were happy with our meals after they got served to us. Even though the place was half empty.
I would visit again if we're local again to give the benefit of the doubt. I'd order something else off the menu. Hope they get their pest control in place. And hopefully have the phones...
Read moreWe are on holiday in filey and have booked this pub for a second time because the food is amazing! I go out to eat a lot all round the UK and wow it's been a long time since I've had a meal as well cooked as I had here a few days ago. Our family of 5, 2 adults, 2 children and our baby emailed and were booked in within 12 hours. We got there as it opened and were greeted my friendly staff. High chair ready, ample free and easy parking etc. Reviews said the place was run down but actually it's an 1800s refurbished school house so it's meant to be dated and contains original features and has a lot of stone flooring and original beams and fire places. Tables and toilets very clean, service was great and the menu choice is astonishing. Probably 30 or more dishes and I found 6 different meals that I had a hard choice narrowing down. Eventually choose the chicken, ham and leak pie. WOW!!! Light puff pastry, chicken and ham melted in my mouth, the gravy was real home made with actual meat pieces. The veg was al dente just as I like it and the chips were also tasty. They make everything themselves from scratch and it shows. Husband had lamb with mash and veg and the gravy type sauce he said was out of this world. Children's menu wasn't exciting and wasn't home made and this seems to happen every where. My kids love fresh food so we are going to be ordering them stuff from the adults menu and hoping they can accommodate a smaller portion request so that's my only complaint. Desert menu was equally amazing. I had malteser something and that was delicious like a thick luxury ice cream. One child had lemon roulade and it vanished in an instant. One child had smartie ice cream sundae and loved it. She is also a really fussy eater and ate every single thing here so that speaks for itself. Husband had rhubarb crumble but it didn't look that great and was a small portion with too much juice in the bowl but he said it tasted nice. Look forward to eating here again on Sunday for our wedding anniversary :) thanks for...
Read moreWalked in, the place was empty but reserved signs on all the tables in the old part of the pub - advised by waiting staff to go look in the other room after waiting at the bar without being acknowledged for 5 mins. The other room was nice enough and had 3 families sitting with children - I myself have 2 children and it seems that was the designated area for children which, is a bit odd.
The children's indoor play area is a big draw and one of the reasons we chose it but sadly it was closed due it parts being broken which was annoying. We took a seat and I went to the bar to order drinks at which point I made a passing comment to the girl behind the bar that perhaps they could advertise this online to which she replied "I can't do anything about it, I only work behind the bar, it's not my problem you'd need to speak to the manager" to which I replied that it is her problem as she works for the establishment and that she could do to brush up on her customer service skills to which she replied "if you don't like it you can go somehere else, The Plough Inn is open just down the road"
Absolutely charming! So I asked to speak to the manager to which the girl refused staring that she's busy in the kitchen!
I poked my head into the kitchen to inform the manager of her barmaids lack of customer service skills to which she acknowledged that "it's not right" but didn't apologise or do anything to turn the situation around which was really poor on her part. It was hardly a big surprise. We left and found a different place to eat on our way home instead which was lovely!
I had fond memories of this pub from my childhood and early 20's - having been out the country for the last 5 years I was curious to see how it's doing as I've been there dozens of times over the years but I was sorry to see the state of it. As others said it was dirty and run down. We won't ever be returning until it changes owners - avoid...
