We were riding the Swale Trail from The Dales Cycle Centre to Gunnerside with our 5 year old and 2 year old.
We battled wind and rain for 4 hours and finally arrived at Gunnerside exhausted (especially the 2 little ones) and decided to have a drink and dry off. We purchased a Pint, a half, two glasses of apple juice, Mini Chedders and a Twix for £15.10. We asked if they were serving food, the bar lady explained they were not.
Having taken a seat inside, our kids were starving so we gave them sandwiches from their pack lunch that they were unable to eat on the ride as it had been pouring with rain for most of it (we didn't think a twix and mini cheddars were enough sustenance for a 2 and 5 year old).
We were exhausted, but happy after a hard ride and thankful to be inside in the warm during heavy rain.
5 minutes later, someone from the kitchen headed over and tells us the kids can't eat their own sandwiches in the pub! I explained that we'd just bought £15 of drinks and snacks and unfortunately they were not serving food and the kids were starving.
The lady told us rather rudely that "we should have planned better" and insisted the kids could not eat their tiny sandwiches.
Frankly this attitude was so unnecessary and petty. We were going to spend another £15 on another round of drinks, but given the attitude and being made to feel unwelcome we instead headed home.
What seemed like an ok pit stop on a bike ride is actually a tired establishment with a bad attitude. Would...
Read moreHighly recommended. This strikes me as a traditional Dales pub that's lovingly cared for. The staff were very welcoming and took time to chat with a genuine interest in what I was doing. There was a good range of local ales and other beers and spirits. The food was of a very good standard and came in very generous portions. Not an enormous menu but enough to please. I had Yorkshire ham sandwich that included 3 thick slices of meat (beware the rind, this is Yorkshire ham after all!), a side salad (that essentially was a full and fresh salad!) and a mound of kettle crisps, absolutely delicious! I saw other food coming out that looked equally as good. I think they serve food all day from midday. I will definately...
Read moreJust had a lovely evening meal here. The village of gunnerside is super pretty and the Kings Head pub does not disappoint. It's cosy inside and while it looks like it has been updated its kept its lovely dales character. Lots of old dales and tour de france pics decorate the walls. The bar is well stocked with excellent local beer from Askrigg, gluten free and alcohol free bottles. We were a family of 4 and booked ahead - while there were a couple of tables free I wouldn't chance it. We ordered veg lasagne / child's fish and chips / chicken curry / chicken and leek pie special. All were top notch. Service was friendly, atmosphere good, even the toilets were clean...
