Really disappointing attitude toward staff training and standards.
The young lad on the coffee machine had obviously not had any training at all. He re-steamed milk that had already been heated once, which was already smelling burnt from him not checking the temperature. Congealed old milk left on the steam arm (see photo), burnt old grounds left in the handle, no rinsing or wiping between shots.
I used to train baristas. Any of these hygiene issues individually would be ringing alarm bells that this staff member is not ready to be serving coffee safely to customers, so to see all of them together was really shocking.
When I asked about coffee training, the person in charge took over. He said it was the lad's first day, and remade the coffee without showing him what was wrong.
The remade coffee still had old grounds left in the basket, tasted really burnt, and the chap treated me like i was being a nuisance.
I felt really bad for the young lad, he's being set up really poorly with these low standards, and he could make someone really ill without understanding why. Crusty old milk on a steam arm is a breeding ground for bacteria and a contamination for people with allergies and vegans.
