The setting is lovely, at the foot of the Cleveland Hills, with the Cleveland Way going right through the middle. We'll definitely be back to the area to explore.

We had some issues with the site itself, as follows:

We stayed for two nights in two roundhouses, noting it was for a family of three and a family of four. However, the roundhouses are really only accommodation for two, indeed no bedding was provided for the second bed at all (and we were only told of this two days before we were due to arrive).

The second bed was a sofa bed, and it turned out the roundhouse is too small and cramped to simply fold the sofa out, you need to rearrange the furniture to even remotely make it work, and even then you're left with a sofa bed at a funny angle filling the middle of the room.

One sofa bed (in 'Badger') was only a single, which wasn't much use as the family of four was put in there. This made things especially cramped.

Only a tiny table for two is provided on the deck, so all four can't easily sit and eat dinner together. A table fixed to the wall inside will again only seat two. You can move the chairs from inside out, but in our house ('Beaver') it was only a tiny bistro table so four couldn't realistically eat at it.

There was a live music event with thumping bass until well after 10:30pm. We have young children and none of us could sleep through it. We were all exhausted and in a bad mood in the morning. This seemed very poorly judged for a small, peaceful campsite. None of the campsite guests from the field we were staying in appeared to be away attending the event, so it was just a separate pubic event and never mind about the guests. We were told of the event a few weeks ago, but it might have been nice to indicate it would be extremely loud and go on late so we could think to cancel our booking.

The toilet block was very rarely and/or poorly cleaned. The public had used it for the live event, and it was exceptionally messy in the morning when the campers were getting up and ready for their day. It was tidied up a little later in the day but not cleaned thoroughly, and the same bits of trash were on the floor throughout our visit.

The washing-up sinks were full of old food. Like someone had dumped ten cans of minestrone soup in them. We had to clean one out ourselves just to wash up. The other remained as filthy at the end of our visit so I guess no one was cleaning that / paying attention to that

The lights in the shower were motion detected; these detectors couldn't see you in the shower, so you'd be plunged into dark while washing and have to go outside the cubicle to get the light back on.

You can't control the temperature of the showers, inexplicably. It's just on / off motion detectors. We couldn't wash our daughter during our visit as the only setting was scalding.

As a side note, towels aren't provided in the roundhouses. No warning was provided of that, but fortunately we did take some just in case.

These negative y did outweigh the positives, which were:

the BBQ was large and robust, we were happily surprised with the quality. You need to provide your own tongs etc, which I'm sure you always carry in your back pocket.

the roundhouses were clean and neatly decorated, and came with crockery, cutlery, kettle, fridge and a hotel style basket of coffee and tea etc.

a half-filled jar of birdseed was a cute personal touch. The personal feel was offset by a label on a book of local walks demanding money be paid if the book is even opened (just leave one for reference in the room, everyone will be opening it whatever the label says).

the restaurant was friendly and the food pleasant, I enjoyed the burger. It's pretty basic and certainly not a destination in itself, but handy to have if you're on the site

There's plenty of parking everywhere, the site felt safe.

It was lovely to be surrounded by trees. It's great to have a large green space preserved in the middle of the site for the kids to play on.

Hopefully this is useful information for...

Stopped for 2 nights in a glamping pod in the pod village. Dined in the cafe when we were there, several times. Food was delicious and good portion sizes.Good selection. Cafe was clean and well maintained. Lovely service from everyone, but especially from Liv (?) who I got the impression manager, or senior, for the cafe. The Lord Stones rocks and a great lookout point are literally a 2 minute walk from the cafe. A bit steeper walk takes you up the hill to the Alec Flconer memorial seat. And what views!! So worth the uphill walk to see the chair and the views. We did walk further to the Wainstones and got lost coming back. (Don't ask) A kind local brought us back in his car to the campsite and Liv was kind enough to look after us when we got back. There is a little onsite shop that sells a good range of stuff from camping essentials you may have forgot like toothbrush, sunscreen, poo bags for the dog etc as well as lovely items for gifting like gin, souvenirs etc snacks and nibbles, knick knacks for the kids and farm shop stuff like game and bacon, cheese. Items were very reasonably priced, too. Enjoyed a couple of pints sat outside in the sun, watching the numerous birds feeding at the feeding stations. The pod village was lovely and private, gated off and surrounded by trees, with pond areas and replica Lordstones in a bench area that had what was a water fountain feature (but wasn't working). Pod had good amenities for your stay. If I had one criticism regarding our stay it would just be that the pod needed a smidge of tlc - a good brush down of the exterior firstly, as first impressions walking up to it was how covered in cobwebs and dead crusty daddy longlegs it was- more than the other pods, for some reason. (We were in Curlew pod) I'm more than aware they are exposed to the elements etc but wouldn't take 2 minutes to brush of cobwebs. Would have done it myself but no brush was available. Light above bed was broke and ceilling bulb had one blown, 1 loose, the ash bucket missing to clean out log burner or bbq and external light wasn't working. Just little details that could easily be sorted, but slightly detracted from the 'luxury glamping' description. Would definitely stop again, but maybe next time we'll try a round house to see how they compare to the pods, and at weekend when the Belted Bull restaurant is open, as would love to dine there. Overall, a fantastic place, ideally situated for some pleasant walks with amazing views, and then a good base to come back to for good food, drinks and relaxation. *cafe closes at 4pm but have to get food orders in by 3pm. Someone needs to have a refresh of the website too, and sort contradicting/out of date info. Eg Says restaurant is open on a Thursday, but isn't anymore. Only Friday and Saturday, in spring and summer. We'd probably not have booked the dates we did had we known, as wed booked expecting to eat there on the Thursday. Says Round houses are bookable upto 28th October on one page and only the 5th of...

I had planned to camp at Lordstones for the night on my C2C walk. There isn't much available accommodation in this area, camping or otherwise, so my itinerary included this place. The Web site seemed to indicate the cost for a pitch would be £22.50, but I thought this would be a mistake and intended to include it as a stop anyhow. Other C2C walkers on the trail subsequently confirmed that the cost FOR PITCHING A SMALL BACKPACKING TENT WOULD BE £22.50 PER NIGHT. This is utterly unprecedented and there was no way I was going to pay this ridiculous amount. For not much more I arranged to stay at The Buck Inn at Chop Gate. It involves walking a little further (about 3 miles) on the Cleveland Way heading east, past The Wainstones and getting picked up by the landlord at the top of Clay Bank. He then takes you the 2 miles down the road to the pub and back again the next morning. Great dinner, huge breakfast, wonderfully kept German Beers (try the Juva - Wolfgang recommends it) and very comfy stay. I had a garden room. Cost me about twice as much as Lordstones but The Buck Inn represented GREAT VALUE, whereas LORDSTONES IS A RIP OFF based on an apparent monopoly through lack of alternative available choice of accommodation for hikers travelling through. Well, Mr Complacent Owner, there are alternatives to people getting...

We parked here and did a lovely scenic walk. We knew that there was a café but there wasn't a menu available online so didn't really know what to expect. Plenty of tables inside and also lots outside (nice on a sunny day!) They serve breakfasts (which looked very nice from what I saw people eating) but by the time we got back from our walk we waited until 12 when they start serving lunch. Menu was good with plenty of choices (with roasts on a Sunday) I got the beef burger which was very nice. Good size, lovely tasting patty, plenty of cheese and bacon in a really nice fresh bun. It was served with a good portion of really nice thin chips. (Also came with lots of lovely fresh salad and really good coleslaw which I suspect was homemade) My wife got the beef sandwich. Two pieces of bread with a good amount of roast beef. Good value for what it cost. Only minor point was the bread was a bit dry (almost like the sandwich had been prepared hours earlier and left out) Overall, we had a really good meal. Staff were very polite and efficient, and we would definitely eat here again.
