A friend and myself visited this pub whilst hiking along the hadrians wall path and this was only 0.5 miles off the track so we went here for our evening meal. ||The reception we got from the guy behind the bar was so abrupt and rude. Whilst looking for a seat we poked our heads into a part of the pub just past the bar and the man behind the bar snapped quite aggressively "Where do you think you're going?!" We said we were just looking for a seat (as you do when you walk into a public house). He told us that we couldn't go in there because that was the restaurant section. This led me to ask if we were allowed to eat here. His attitude and tone of voice was absolutley disguisting. I think he realised that he was being a and told us where we could sit but we weren't allowed to take our bags with us and had to leave them with him beside the bar.||We sat down where we were told to on a tiny table and started chatting with another group that were sat beside us. During the conversation the lady I was speaking to mentioned, completely unprompted, that the man behind the bar had been rude to them when they came in too so it clearly wasn't just us. His attitude seemed to have rubbed off on the two barmaids too as they also seemed quite cold although when chatting with them one on one away from the bar they seemed friendly enough.||This experience really soured us to the place which is a shame because it seemed like a decent little establishment. It was quite small (from what we were permitted to see anyway) and cosy as a result. It was posssibly a bit too small as all of the tables were very close together to the point where I had to tuck myself in whenever somebody needed to squeeze past me to get to the bathroom. ||The food was good and the beer hit the spot although there weren't a great deal of beers on draught. There was the typical basic bar menu. I'm not sure if there was more choice in the restaurant though because the proprietor made it quite clear that we weren't good enough to be allowed back there. ||The way we (and apparently other patrons) were treat made this a 1* review however the food has managed to redeem it a little bit to a 2* review. ||The Twice Brewed Inn is just a little bit further along the road and I've heard great things about it so if I was going to revisit the area it would be a no brainer and I would give this place a miss in favour of going to the Twice Brewed...

Read moreIncredibly rude publican who, despite working there for apparently 20 years, hasn’t learnt basic customer service. Definitely wouldn’t recommend if you’re looking for service with a smile!
We were waiting for service - we weren’t sure if their bell system was working, so pressed it a few times. A very angry publican finally strutted out, berated us for letting the ‘children ring the bell’ (it hasn’t actually been them!) and stormed off with his menus. Obviously very stressed and perhaps unable to handle the return of customers after lockdown. This is certainly not how you speak to paying customers.
Far better going to the twice brewed inn, where you will be greeted with friendly service and good food!
The light on the bell didn’t stay on when pressing, which is why we assumed it wasn’t working. That’s why we tried one on the other table. If your colleague had bothered to ask, rather than rider snapping at us and storming off with the menus, making it clear we weren’t welcome, we would have been able to explain this.
Regarding the quality of your food - yes, according to the reviews, your hunters chicken is a real winner! Also note, you and your colleague were not wearing masks either, which was why I assumed you didn’t bother in your establishment. Clearly not taking covid precautions seriously.
Your colleague really needs to work on his customer service (other reviews here demonstrate we aren’t the only people who have experienced this side of your establishment). If he had politely asked about the bell (we’d have then explained) and handed us the menu, as you would expect from someone working in such a position, this whole thing would have been avoided. Though going on some of the reviews here, we probably...
