This hotel is the most horrific place I have ever stayed. We arrived to first have to send food back and the had to change rooms due to the shower being freezing and the window wouldn't open. MAJOR HEALTH AND SAFETY HIGH RISK HAZARD. Then to be told breakfast would be served between 8-9 we was greeted by no one and waited 45mins to be left in a hotel by ourselves. We had to contact the head office as when we called the hotel directly no one answered. The head office called the hotel to which my partner answered the phone in the office to speak to the lady in the head office. She was speechless and told us the area manager would be in touch. We have paid for a two night stay and now having to leave and find somewhere else and food. The ladies toilets were unkept and full of cobwebs, spiders insects and dirt. There was wholes in the walls that have been covered up with signs. It was dark damp and uninviting. I have come away to relax and unwind and switch off, we chose the this place as it was in the middle of no where. To be faced with upset and stress. This isn't acceptable and I shall not be staying here EVER again and will not be recommending this poor excuse of a hotel to anyone. The manger on a Sunday evening turned around 15 people away for food and drink also so they could clock off and play pool in the other room. The bar/room this morning was full of empty dirty plates and glass's the tables had stains all over them and food still in this. This bar far is the worst experience off staying in a hotel. Absolutely shocking.

We went to the Mill Inn today after we have driven past it at least half a dozen times as we've been staying at a cottage just a few miles away. Everytime we drove past we said that we must try going in. This is our last full day of our holiday and we are gutted we haven't been in until now. We have eaten some nice food whilst being on holiday but our food today at the Mill Inn has been the best. We had the homemade pie. I had steak and ale and Rachel (girlfriend) had the vegetarian option, both were fantastic. They were served with creamy mash, mushy peas and ale gravy. I had a pint of moretti and it was crisp and clean and by far the best pint I've had here. The most impressive thing about the Mill Inn was the staff. The guy behind the bar was the nicest guy ever. At the moment it's all table service (because of covid) and he was very clear explaining how everything worked and to take menus out to our table and he'd be right with us. Some pubs you walk in to now expect you just to know their protocol and can be rude if you don't know their protocol even though they haven't explained it, not the Mill Inn. Polite, explain things perfectly and serve the best food and drink. If you drive up to the Mill Inn don't drive past, stop in and get some amazing food and drink. Love the place. Oh and there's plenty of space to park too. We plan to holiday up this way again and making that decision is easy when you have amazing pubs like the Mill Inn. Thank you all at the Mill Inn.

Recently taken over by Steve and Jerry who also own The Clickem Inn at Penrith who gave us a very warm welcome on arrival on Tuesday evening. Sadly we were informed that the bar and restaurant was not open Monday and Tuesday because of staff shortages which is quite common at the moment in tourist areas. This meant that we had to travel to Keswick to find dinner which was a struggle to say the least as it was quite busy. That aside we thoroughly enjoyed our stay as nothing was too much trouble for the proprietors or staff and the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. A charming little country pub which is steeped in history with a cosy lounge and log burner, a decent range of real ales and wines which are also priced fairly. The bedrooms could do with a lick of paint but we were assured that this would be dealt with after the main tourist season, other than that the rooms were comfortable with nice clean bedding. Although the interior needed some improvement the quality of your stay didn’t. All in all a very enjoyable little break. We will return.

Didn’t book a stay here but myself and my partner were in the Lakes for our 10 year anniversary. My partner found this place after looking around Google maps for a real, countryside, warm, welcoming atmosphere that does some amazing food! The pictures we came across were exactly what we was looking for so we decided to head there and conveniently it was only a short drive from where we were.

The drive there, once off of the main road, takes you down a narrow country lane which is a lovely scenic drive in itself until you happen across the smallest village, Mungrisdale, where this inn is located.

As we walked in, it was exactly what we were looking for. Local pub atmosphere, anyone welcome, dogs in the corner and wood burning fire place on providing the heat you can only describe as a warm hug you only get from your grandma when she’s wearing that knitted cardigan!

We ordered our food and waited with the utmost anticipation and all for good reason. My partner ordered the breaded Brie wedges for starters and myself the chilli and garlic prawns. A favourite of mine. Both were cooked to absolute perfection and were the perfect opener to the rest of the evening. Needless to say they returned to the kitchen without a crumb left on the plates. I ordered a rump steak for myself and my partner the spinach and sweet potato pie.

If held off of ordering steak for a while after a few bad ones but after seeing the image of this rump steak that we found online, I decided to give it a go. Ordered medium rare and it was cooked to absolute perfection! Juices flowing, more than enough sauce, chips with a little bit of a crunch and the perfect amount of seasoning. Hands down the best steak I have ever had, so much so, it made me a little emotional. I simply won’t order another steak as it will never compare to this one. My partner isn’t a pie lover but decided to give this one a go and the gamble paid off. Exquisitely cooked, a lovely creamy mash which still held its fluffiness at the same time and veg that just accompanied it perfectly.

Unfortunately, we aren’t locals to the lakes but with absolute certainty, whenever we are back we will be eating from here again!

They don’t advertise so you won’t see much on their socials so let me do that for you. Make sure you go, stay the night or two, but whatever you do, make sure you at least eat here. If you walk up Bowscale Tarn, it is the perfect place to visit when driving back, on the regional route 71, refuel before heading back on your way. You absolutely will...

We’re a family of four and went to the pub for some lunch and drinks after a walk.

When we arrived, there were a few people sitting outside, but the tables inside were empty, not a person in sight.

We headed over to the bar, where an older man and woman were standing. The first thing I heard the woman say was, “I hate serving customers.” We had only caught the end of their conversation, so we decided to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I asked for a table for four, and the woman asked if we had booked. Keep in mind, the place was completely empty. I said no, and as she walked past me, she muttered, “This way then,” and led us to a table in the corner. We felt really unwelcome, something we’ve never experienced anywhere else. Still, we sat down and waited. After 15 minutes, no one had come over to serve us.

I went back to the bar, where the same man and woman were standing, and they didn’t even look up at me. I waited a few minutes before asking if I could order food. The man replied, “We are so busy, but give me a minute.” I might have understood if they were actually busy, but the place was dead, practically a tumbleweed moment, with only a few drinkers outside. No one was eating inside or out.

Eventually, the woman looked at me and said, “I’ll come serve you at the table,” which was fine. By this point, we had been there nearly 25 minutes and had received terrible service. When she came over and asked what we wanted, we first asked how long the food would take. Her response was, “I don’t know how long it will take the chef to cook it.” We were only ordering chips and a kids’ meal of cod and chips. She could have checked with the kitchen, but instead, she stood there smirking, reminding me of her earlier comment about not liking to serve customers.

We decided to leave without ordering. We weren’t about to spend our hard-earned money in a place like that.

What a strange thing to say “I hate serving customers” when that’s literally your job, and the place was empty.

I’d avoid this pub. Don’t even bother going in for a drink they clearly don’t enjoy serving you anyway.

Terrible staff and terrible service...
