The cafe was a welcome sight as we came into Orton after a trudge across the moor from Shap in horizontal wind and rain. Concious of sopping wet clothes and muddy boots, our small group of bedraggled walkers trooped in. We needn't have worried; the staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. With cries of not to worry about the large muddy puddles we created, we were directed to the loos to dry off and make ourselves comfy. Pots of tea were ordered, the range of cakes was delicious and my damp friend was able to tuck into a slice of gluten free lemon drizzle. Requesting information about taxis, the Manageress offered to give us a lift if we wanted to make ourselves comfy until the end of her shift. (In the end we were able to share a taxi with another couple going our way). This wonderful offer, coming on top of the warm and friendly welcome and delicious cakes, confirms the Orton Scar café and it's staff as outstanding. We continued on our much cheered by...
Read moreWe are early morning just after the cafe opened. We were the only customers at that time. We were welcomed very warmly. The choice of breakfast options is extensive and reasonably priced. The coffee selection is also wide and decaf options are there for all styles of coffee. The food was served promptly. It was a full plate with everything for a full English breakfast. The food was free of oil, hot and cooked through. It tasted great and it was great value for money. There was a wide selection of cakes, snacks and healthy options too. All in all an enjoyable way to start the day in a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of seating for busier times. It is for sale so I hope the new owners maintain such a high standard- it would be a real shame if it had to close permanently as it would be a real loss to the village and...
Read moreFrom the moment we walked in, we felt unwelcome. There were 15 of us and the lady at front of house made it quite obvious she didn’t like our children who sat at the tables and were well behaved throughout. Food was overpriced and she was extremely rude. It was as if we were an inconvenience to them. She wasn’t happy that we didn’t squeeze onto 2 four seater tables when we arrived and spoke to the lovely young waitress girl disgustingly in front of us. If I were the girls mother I’d be fuming. She also didn’t like when I politely asked for butter because our very expensive sandwiches didn’t have any on. We spent over £200 yet we saw the woman behind the counter rolling her eyes and pulling her face to another member of staff as we were leaving. Hope I’ve saved a few families a disappointing trip...
