Old-fashioned, dark and quiet pub. The Red Lion is in a lovely location (Arkengarthdale as seen in All Creatures Great and Small). From the outside, the pub does look somewhat neglected and certainly in need of some TLC (repainting, hanging baskets perhaps, etc.). But don't let that put you off! Inside it is a little old-fashioned, cosy grotto. We arrived to an empty pub and the attentive lady served us promptly. The Black Sheep Best Bitter was served in tip-top condition (Black Sheep Ale was also available - no guest ale though). Having a 7-year old with us, we were 'sent' to a little snug area. Not exactly the way to encourage a friendly atmosphere, I thought.
Overall, it seemed to me that The Red Lion is a 'quick pint or two and off you go' sort of pub. However, I'm willing to be proved wrong and will revisit one day, I'm sure.

Walked 5 minutes up the hill to the CB Inn where there was a friendly & warm welcome for all including the dog. Dried out & had a superb pint of...
Read moreThe Red Lion is an unspoilt period gem totally unappreciated by some of the other reviewers. In a fantastic location for walkers, not only will you be served a tip top pint of ale, you can also purchase all sorts of other goodies including local guidebooks. The Landlady is a real Yorkshire character, and if she takes an old fashioned approach to kids & dogs in pubs then that's her choice. She certainly doesn't tolerate fools. We'll all miss the Red Lion once it's gone & become just another...
