Excellent, warm atmosphere on entering. Not too busy, but not empty by any means. Great, attentive service throughout, including the use of the Blue Light Discount (20%) on the food, but check T&C's if you can use this. We were having the Burns Niggt 'Special' Menu. Starters: I had the Crispy Pheasant which was particularly nice, especially the clear chilli gel. Nice but of heat to add to the sharpness of the apple and pickled red onion. The other half had the Crab and Avocado salad, which she said was initially nice, but was disappointed by the several pueces of Crab shell mixed into main part of this. 2nd course: Choice of Traditional or Vegan Haggis, 'Neeps & Tatties'. We both had the traditional style, with a whisky cream, which was delicious. (Beware if not used to the peppery taste of a prepared Haggis). Mains: I had the Balmoral Chicken (wrapped in bacon and stuffed with Haggis and Sausage meat), with Buttery Mash and 'Neeps', with a whisky cream. Again, it was delicious, moist, and cooked just right. The other half had Venison in rich 'jus' (gravy for us Northerners) and creamy mash, which initially looked nice, but she stated the Venison was a very cheap cut, absolutely 'riddled' with sinew, like it was trying to cut/chew through elastic bands. I tried it myself and was immediately put off. She managed to eat what she could, but left the majority of the 'venison', which tasted more like a cheap cut of beef (we have both had Venison on many occasions, and this was nothing like anything previously consumed). Disappointing main, which left us thinking were they attempting to fool customers. Desserts: I had the Traditional 'Cranachan' Sundae (Whiskey Whipped cream, with Raspberries and toasted Oats). This was Ok but not fantastic as it was essentially a very simple, uncomplex dessert. The other half had the Salted Caramel Panna Cotta, which was very nice for my taste but a tad too sweet for her. We will still return to The Rising Sun again, but re-think some options. Sorry, but as my bio says, I'll big-up the good, but call-out the bad.

Whilst the staff are friendly, I think they are also shy as they rarely show their face, which is odd given that we chose to sit in the area designated as waiting service. I started typing this review 15 minutes after finishing our mains and we are still waiting for someone to show any interest in us. Yes this is Sunday, but we arrived at 14:15 after the usual Sunday lunch rush. The menu is extensive and has good choice. My wife and I had the mushroom starter, which was ok. My daughter had garlic bread, which should not have been removed from its parents so early in life. Yes there was very little of it. The roast beef main would be delicious for someone who enjoys well done beef. I do not. There was, however a large portion on our plates, including a large amount of vegetable, the latter having been cooked firm and al dente and just right, but sadly the meat on our various plates required some effort to cut. My daughter decided to go to the bar and request the dessert menu. I will have dessert and then finish this, unless the dessert takes a while to arrive. The dessert took about 10 minutes to arrive, so not too bad, although there are only 3 other couples in the restaurant at present so I would have been disappointed if it had taken longer. The crumble pie was tasty, but lukewarm. It is a comfortable and pleasant looking pub, but I am afraid the restaurant team had an off day today, perhaps they had been done in by the busier 12-2 heavy lunch period.

Overall a lovely environment. However, we waited, what we thought was an awfully long time for your meal and when it did arrive, it was luke warm as if it had been lying around. The staff were very helpful and did offer to replace the meal. We both decided, we didn't want to wait a long time again and decided to keep the meal we had. The staff were just helpful in wanting to put the situation right and we both left happy with the very kind service.

Christmas day dinner ruined.

This place is a genuine joke. Firstly we waited 45 minutes for our drinks, which would of probably been longer if my partner didn't go and 'remind' the staff we were waiting. We then further waited another 30 minutes for our starters, I ordered 'Goat’s cheese roulade coated in walnuts' in which was meant to be served on toasted bloomer bread...It came on slightly toasted cheap normal loaf bread...we asked one of the members of staff if they ran out of bloomer bread, and she confusingly replied 'No we've been serving this all day'...

Secondly our long awaited Turkey roast dinner, came with such small helpings of each veg ect, for example...we hardly had a table spoon of mash...I'm sure you can figure what the rest would be like...Also the much loved roast potato's were bland and clearly from a frozen packet...The mash was not home made and quite clearly was ready made mash...so you can imagine this main was not very nice.

Finally we got our desserts quite instantly after our mains were taken? which considering everything else took over 30 minutes to arrive i was surprised by, I'm not going to lie my dessert was fine, i enjoyed it.

Overall I will not be eating Christmas dinner here again, or dinner for that matter, and the fact I paid £56.99 (£170.97) for me my partner and dad...for this meal....I felt robbed.

I have never eaten out for Christmas day, and I thought it would be a nice change...And in all honesty I regret it and will not be doing it again. So...
