I won't be going again phoned in advance to book a table and was told 18:30 would be fine on arrival was told there were no tables and was asked to wait. After 15 minutes there was a table free to use. Once seated we placed our order which was fine and we received our starters and then our mains. This was my wife's birthday and we chose the rock inn as we had been there a few times in the past. Anyway part way through our mains we wanted more drinks and after waiting 5 minutes and no staff around I stopped eating to go to the bar and asked for more drinks. At this point another customer was being served by somebody else and was told they would bring the drinks to them. When I was served I was not offered the same and had to wait while my food continued to go cold and after another couple of minutes I took my drinks back to the table. As it was my wife's birthday I just let this go and we finished our meals. But the real disappointment came when paying my bill I approached the counter and a member male staff with a Scottish voice asked what I wanted. I explained I wanted to settle my bill and he then asked me a few details and then gave me my bill and walked off instead off finishing off by processing my payment. After a couple of minutes of trying to get his attention I said can I pay my bill please and on him seeing my bank card looked annoyed and brought his wireless machine over. What worried me more was he then took my card out of my hand and when I said shouldn't I do that he replied suit yourself I've been doing this for 46 years like this and I was stunned he had spoke to me like this I made a point of paying my bill and said I will not be coming back again to be spoken to like that and his response was do what you want and waved his arm at me as if to say leave this ruined my meal and my 8 year old girl could not believe how rude this person was to me. I don't expect the world but good customer service should go without saying the rock inn has lost my future custom and I will be telling anyone who is thinking of going for a meal to avoid...
Read moreThis is a little gem of a pub. Pulling into the car park, you're met with stunning views across the rolling landscape which look fantastic - particularly in the gloriously sunny weather we enjoyed on our visit. The landlord keeps a good pint - I know that sounds like a pretty basic requirement, but it's surprising sometimes how the governor of a pub lets the quality slip - and alongside offerings like Peroni, Moretta and Estrella on draught there were some good local choices too like Magic Sponge and Thwaites Gold. But the star of this show is the food - virtually everything cooked from complete scratch, meaning that individual alterations can be made to the vast majority of dishes to allow for particular needs or tastes, and meaning that the staff can tell you exactly what's in something in case of allergies (my wife has an onion allergy). In the age of "ping and ding" pre-packaged microwave meals in pub kitchens, it was absolutely brilliant to hear that we couldn't taste a particular sauce because it hadn't been made yet - each portion is individually made to order. Now, you'll be thinking this makes the food expensive, year? Actually, no...some things run parallel with other pubs, some are just a touch more expensive. Example - my quarter pound lamb burger, served with home made hand cut chips and side salad (attention to detail - the chef had even removed the watery seeds from the middle of the cucumber, lovely touch) and served on a lovely fresh bun - £7.95. The salmon fillet special, served with chips, potatoes or mash plus seasonal vegetables as desired and dressed with a lemon and rosemary butter - £13.95...but the salmon fillet was huge. All in all, the location is stunning, the food is excellent, the ale is kept well, their attention to Co-Vid19 regulations is absolutely bang on the money and we were made to feel very welcome indeed - our intended quick pit stop for one drink turned into three and a half hours and dinner for five, so they must be doing something right! A quality establishment - give them a visit,...
Read moreLovely pub, great ambience, had higher expectations over the food due to recommendations. Not much of a selection for me, but I understand a menu cannot be too extensive otherwise you are a master of none, however I have to point out the cost for your sirloin steak which comes with potatoes and veg £20.90, 3 opted for chips instead of boiled potatoes, but then when I questioned where the veg was, it was pointed out you either get potaotes and veg or chips with no veg. Then Maddie advised that as they wanted chips, which were frozen, not homemade, we would have to pay an additional 1.50 for the veg. I advised that the board could be misconstrued and said maybe clarity on the steak could be made, after all potatoes could be mashed, boiled, roasted or chipped, but that didn't matter we still were not getting any veg. The steak was cooked well, a little thin for the money, the peppercorn sauce was too watery and to serve an expensive dish with frozen chips, my 3 guests were a little disappointed. I on the otherhand did like your soup. We all had a dessert to finish off the meal as it was a birthday celebration. Please don't get me wrong the food was cooked well, but at £90 for four people, we all felt it wasn't good...
