We went to the Shire Horse for father's day. We had made a reservation but because it was a nice day decided to eat outside. We had to ask for the table that was available to be cleaned. We ordered soon after having been given the menus however it took over an hour to be finally served. We also had to ask a waitress for an update on our orders as it was taking so long. Despite having reserved and paying a deposit we noticed people arriving at the bar being served ahead of us. We were told that there was a long wait due to it being Father's Day and that we should have been told that when we arrived. There was no offer of anything to make up for this. When the food finally arrived it was very poor quality, whether the roasts or the kids menus. The food looked unappetising and the roasts had thin slices of meat drowned in a tasteless gloopy gravy which would have been much better served in pots instead so it could have been avoided. The Yorkshire puddings were so dry that they were rock hard. None of us finished our meals as they were so poor. Disappointing for the price paid and what seemed like a good menu. We had also ordered some cottage pie balls as a starter which arrived in a bowl with no napkins. They were really greasy. There was barely an apology from the staff, who seemed overwhelmed by the amount of customers. After we had paid and left my wife realised they had charged us the full amount, despite having already paid a deposit. She rang the pub and was told that they couldn't do it but a main office of Chef and Brewer could which they would do within two days. Chef and Brewer never rang her so she called the pub numerous times to finally get her deposit back after over a week. Overall a poor experience and will definitely not go back or want to go to another Chef and Brewer establishment. We would not recommend this to anyone. It is a shame as the location is actually quite nice. It was a huge disappointment on Father's Day.

This was a lunchtime meal to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The experience could best be described as OK. We arrived on time and were welcomed by a polite and friendly young man who checked if we had any allergies or dietary restrictions. We did not. We were shown to a tiny table in a rather dark corner. We accepted it and thought perhaps all other tables were taken although at 3.00 pm it was the end of their lunchtime period. We ordered Rebellion beer and Chilean white wine. The food was ordered from the standard pub classics menu, 2 x mushroom & ale pie. The pie pastry was very crisp & almost too hard to cut into. The mushrooms were fine although the sauce a bit gloopy and overly salty. The rest of the meal being chips, vegetables, peas & gravy, tasted fine although none of it was particularly nicely or attractively presented. Service was average. The waiter was a bit slow to take orders but food arrived very hot and promptly. The waiter was not attentive. I was surprised that he never came back to ask if our food or drinks were satisfactory although he was right next to us cleaning & re-setting tables, so he could easily have paused his cleaning routine to check on us. The other point to mention is the waiter seemed somewhat ham-fisted in his service and plonked the drinks on the table without placing them carefully in front of each customer. Perhaps he’s new to the job. The ambience overall is nice & cosy in winter with a real fire in the front bar area. Unfortunately, the food and the service we feel lets this place down. Value for money is average for this area. You get the impression of being in just another pub chain and of being treated as just another number in the till roll.

We live about 3 hours away from the Shire Horse at Littlewick Green (on the A4 near Maidenhead). We used to live near here, and as we were in the area we thought we’d book up. I’m pleased we did. The food was delicious as it always had been on our many previous visits. I had the British Slow-Cooked Steak & Ale Pie with a shortcrust pastry base and a flaky puff pastry lid, herb-roasted carrots, seasonal veg and gravy with your choice of chips or buttery mash. £16.29. Beautifully 'home-made' pie. So nice, filled with plenty of meat. My wife had the 28-Day-Aged Prime Sirloin 8oz with wild garlic butter, seasonal salad, grilled half tomato and chips (£20.49), which she said was delicious. We went on a Sunday lunchtime service (1pm), and it was a bright sunny day. There was loads of people outside enjoying their meals in the sun. We decided to sit outside also. We didn’t have to wait long to order food and drinks. The many staff we interacted with were genuinely friendly and happy to help. Plenty of parking there too. Highly recommended.

Hot Friday lunchtime, plenty of seating outside on the grass area although on a very hot day not all tables had umbrellas. Garden area is difficult for mobility challenged visitors although there was a table just outside between the garden exit door & kitchen door. Which when we arrived was in the full sun, I asked if an umbrella could be erected & the waitress said no but if we waited a while the sun would move to the other side of the building & we'd be shaded or we could move to the grass area. The sun did shade the table by the time we'd finished our meal!! The food itself, the first comment made by one of my guests was for the price the quantity was small & not impressive. I ordered a rump steak & requested it be cooked medium rare & that I didn't wish to have blood pour out when I cut into it. I stated I'd like it to be rested before plating. This seemed to cause some confusion with the 'chef' & the waitress came to clarify asking if I meant I didn't wish to see any pink meat. I confirmed I did as I'd like it cooked medium rare not medium, all I asked was it was rested prior to plating so the fluid was reabsorbed by the meat. Other restaurants manage to achieve this!! When our food eventually arrived my steak was cooked to medium with no pink meat at all. The waitress didn't come over to ask if our food was ok!! Infact I didn't see anyone come out for a little while. The barman who was very friendly had come outside & on his way past (from a short distance away) asked if it was ok, I replied it was a perfectly cooked medium steak!!! After being very clear how I wished my steak to be cooked I saw no point in sending it back & waiting while they tried to cook another. When I ordered at the bar the lovely barman told me where to collect the cutlery & condiments. At that time there was only vinegar no salt or pepper. When the waitress delivered our meals I asked if she could bring some salt & pepper, she replied its just inside the door, I responded politely that there was only vinegar when I came out. She went just inside the door to the table & came back with the salt & pepper stating it was there!!! I found that to be rather unprofessional, had the salt n pepper been there at the time I would've picked it up with the cutlery!! Food: disappointing Waitress: disappointing Barstaff: friendly & welcoming Value for money:...

I recently visited Shire House in Southall, and to be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect — but I left feeling completely impressed.the take away service is not available

The first thing that struck me was the atmosphere. Tucked away just off the busy streets of Southall, Shire House has this cosy, tucked-away charm that feels both modern and familiar. The space was clean, well-kept, and had a quiet buzz to it — the kind of place where you feel instantly comfortable.

What really stood out to me, though, was the service. Everyone I spoke to was genuinely friendly and welcoming, not in a forced or overly formal way — just good, honest hospitality. I didn’t feel rushed at any point, and the staff made sure I had everything I needed without hovering.

Now let’s talk about the food. I ordered the mixed grill, and it was spot on — full of flavour, cooked just right, and generous in portion. Every bite tasted fresh, and you could tell they take pride in what they serve. I also tried their masala chips (because why not?) and they were seriously addictive — crispy, spicy, and perfect on the side.

One thing I appreciated was how Shire House balances that blend of casual and classy. You could easily come here for a relaxed dinner with friends, a low-key date night, or even a family meal. It has that versatility to it.

To top it off, the prices were more than fair for the quality and portion sizes. In a place like Southall where there are so many food options, Shire House manages to stand out without trying too hard — and that’s what I liked most about it.

All in all, it felt like a hidden gem. I’ve already told a few friends to check it out, and I’ll definitely be going back. Next time, I’m eyeing the lamb curry — someone on the next table ordered it and the smell alone nearly made me change my...
