We visit regularly, it's one of the nearest NT properties and, as NT members, the car park, garden and house are free. It's just a short distance from the main trunk road and easy to reach. During restrictions there's plenty of space for distancing. Although in summer it gets busy.
There are great walks, not too arduous. The peaceful tiny church St John's at Helsingham is one of them. Views out to the Arnside Viaduct and the Lake District. Then go beyond down into the broad Lyth Valley and the woods then back to the castle as a circuit.
The gardens are interesting with plenty of variety. The house/castle is good and a guided tour is recommended although in the pandemic some of the best parts are too tight and so closed.
The cafe is good to sit in, with outside seating, the food is good enough and the shop good enough. There is a pub, Strickland Arms, at the gates serving decent food and just under the bridge near the gate is a popular farm shop.
The combination of these features creates a great day out or just a quick trip or stop off for the gardens,...
Read moreVery busy on our visit day. Staff not particularly efficient. The food choice was ok, however, highly priced. I had a cheese scone which was £2.70 and absolutely tiny. My husband had a jacket potato which was ok - £7. We had a pot of tea for 2 and was given the tiniest jug half full of milk. When my husband asked for more milk as it was for 2 people, the staff member said that was for 2! My husband asked for more and was reluctantly given another tiny jug with a miniscule amount of milk in because "we get alot of waste.." Sorry...not my problem! If you're charging £2.70 per person for a tea bag in hot water, surely a decent amount of milk isn't too much to ask! We will definitely bring our own sandwiches and flask next time we visit a National Trust property! We are National Trust members and were disappointed with the experience in the cafe but the Castle itself...
Read moreWe visited during the summer holidays while taking a trip to the castle grounds.
We went early between the switch over from breakfast and lunch menu. The member of staff dealing with me was a little perturbed I wanted to place an order 10 minutes before the lunch menu was available and was told to come back.
When we finally managed to order there was food left over from the breakfast menu so I had a sausage sandwich. My wife had a baked potatoes and the children had a sandwich meal deal.
The sandwich meal deal is described as a box meal but the sandwich came of a plate, no issue just strange description.
What we did order was hot and tasted great.
There is free water refill tap available in the back corner of the seating area (useful to fill a reusable water bottle up before venturing into the castle grounds).
All in all a lovely cafe but is quite expensive...
