I have umm’d and ahhe’d about posting this review for quite some time, but finally decided it was best to let the business know, and for any customers looking to book events for the future. Back in the summer, we chose Sonning golf club to host my grandmothers wake. It was an exceptionally difficult time for my family as her passing was unexpected and upsetting. Initially, the club were brilliant at organising the event for us and my mum and uncle felt positive about choosing them. On the day, the set up was very well laid out, and the food was nice. Nice. Not great. Unfortunately, this was all pretty overshadowed by one woman who seemed to feel as if we were an inconvenience to her for being there. The venue had agreed to play music from a playlist ahead of time, which no one heard playing. I asked the lady to switch it on and she seemed bothered by this but did it anyway. Half an hour before the event was due to finish, she started to walk around trying to wrap things up - clearly trying to get people to leave. She even put the divider across the room. All of this could’ve been forgiven had my mum and her two brothers not paid £700 for the food that was laid out. Rather than the staff offering to wrap up the left over spread if she was so keen on getting us out of the venue (there was a significant amount of food left) the lady presented my mum with a roll of tin foil and told her to do it herself. I’ll say again, this event was a wake for my mum’s mother. With a grieving family that had just paid £700 for some scones and sandwiches. Suffice to say, my mum left the food where it was. We are not a well off family, not that this should matter. My mum and her brothers said nothing at the time and as you can imagine, didn’t want the hassle or added stress on top on the day of their mother’s funeral of complaining to the venue. I personally wasn’t made aware of the problem until afterwards, at which point I was pretty furious given how the woman had conducted herself throughout. It is a massive shame as we had had my grandfathers wake here a few years prior and everything had gone smoothly and the staff were lovely. It was sad to be let down on...
Read moreThis year Sonning Golf Club our golf society Championship that was played over 36 holes that was accompanied with lunch and a 3 course meal.
Located of Duffield road to the East side of Sonning. This golf course is picturesque, well maintained, challenging but sometimes unforgiving. Greens are faster than most other courses but they all run true. If there was one criticism about the golf course it would be the bunkers are inconsistent with the sand depth and they host some large stones.
The course has a modern club house with a spiked lounge and bar along with a members bar (dress rules do apply) and a dining area. The food was absolutely delicious and portions sizes were good and the drinks where no overly priced. The best thing about the club house was the staff. They were friendly, helpful and me you feel like you were part of the club.
The course also hosts a small club shop for all your golfing needs as well as a small practice area and putting green that run close to or similar to the course greens.
All in all my golf score was not the best but I thoroughly enjoyed my day and will...
Read morePlayed the course this week and our visit was first class from start to finish. If you are thinking of visiting then we strongly recommend Sonning GC to you. Not the longest course you'll ever play but the course condition was magnificent despite the hot weather. Tees, Greens and Fairways absolutely top notch and bunkers very consistent. Nice welcome, great staff and pro and lovely drinks. Previous reviews have been critical of the signage but when playing the 5th you walk past the 6th tee about 100 yards short of the green so we didn't think it was a problem. We travelled from Wiltshire, Hertfordshire and West London to play the course. Would we do it again...
