Set in beautiful Teesdale countryside this is a little gem for a vist by walkers, tourists and bickers/cyclists. We followed the covid safe layout through a shop area selling cheeses and all local produce. We picked up some 'Doris' cheese and some Teesdale Blue as well as some lemon curd cheese (forget the lurid yellow concoction of the 1970s; this is pure curd cheese with a lemon zing to it and tasted wonderful on a digestive biscuit - as the host said "your own personal cheesecake". Local bread was bought but the delicious picalli served with the toasties had sold out and no wonder - no vinegary taste and lumps of cauliflower in this on' just a beautifully balance vegetable relish. We ate in the area outside the cafe : toasties made from the cheese created a few feet away followed by cakes and coffee. Lovely tasting simple fare. The two hosts were so friendly and made us feel very welcome. They allowed us to go and see their pigs and have a peak through the window where the cheese was being made. Great to see a new (18 months old) supporting their local producers and making local cheeses. I will definitely...
Read moreWhen we arrived we knew by the friendliness of the cafe staff and Jonathan we had made the right decision to stay in a shepherds hut. We first started with a cheese and meat sharing platter that was made up of their own and local cheeses. The cherry on the cake was actually their Bischoff cheese cake and because it was the last slice I scored for all the scraps as well. Winner winner chicken dinner. We bought a few provisions (cans of locally brewed ales) and made our way to the shepherds hut. Jonathan went through how everything worked including the log fire hot tub. That topped it off for us what a treat. The hut is well equipped, very clean and perfect for a tranquil getaway. Next morning the breakfast was blinking lovely especially the home reared bacon. Haven’t tasted bacon as lovely as that in a long time. It was lovely to meet Allison on the Sunday as she was busy doing cheesy chores on the Saturday.
Defo be back. Cheers to Jonathan, Allison and crew for a first class stay (next time may try a...
Read moreNot really a place to go if you are looking to eat lunch etc. Not much to offer and what there is on the menu seems a little pricey. Drinks were very limited to water, tea , and a juice. We didn't try any of the cheese on offer, I'm sure if this is your preference, then this may be right for you, only you can decide. If you are looking for a decent lunchtime menu with quality food and beverage, the A68 Caffe at Toft hill takes some beating and I think they do cheese. Their cake's and desserts are especially delicious and all home made.
In my opinion the teesdale cheese needs to up its game plan , better menus, more choices , competitive prices and a little better seating / dinning area with better table and chairs, once the cold days of winter arrive, you will probably close for winter as no one could use the...
