Food that that you'd expect in a top London restaurant. Service that is knowledgable, friendly, precise and generous. Ingredients that are hyper-local and impeccably fresh. A relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. A lovely garden. The Barley Sheaf has everything you'd hope for.
Amongst the starters, the scotch egg, chicken wings, poached mackerel and whitebait were favourites from our two visits. Amongst the mains, the plaice with preserved lemon, mussels and capers stood out. The steak came with a great chimichurri sauce. The sticky toffee pudding is the best I've ever eaten. The ice creams and sorbets were amazing -- especially the peach sorbet.
All of the dishes, sauces and sides are prepared from fresh ingredients just before they arrive at the table. Amazingly, each portion of ice cream and sorbet is also prepared from ingredients to order.
What comes through, overall, is that the chef has deep respect for the customers, the staff and the ingredients. A...
Read moreSo far, this is the best pub in the area for food.
I've been visiting the region for the last 3 years, we have friends with a house in Gorran Haven and local pubs only ever offer disappointment with classic food that's a throwback to yesteryear.
This pub has an amazing garden at the back and big indoor spaces with pool and fussball. There's a good range of drinks to choose, reasonably priced with bar snack menu and food menu. Thursday to Sunday they have an evening BBQ so we will head back for this.
We arrived at 1:30pm, it was quiet, service was excellent and the quality of the food all round was good.
I was only a little disappointed that the seafood platter (£15) I ordered was entirely battered/breadcrumbed and the whitebait was missing. The fish within was excellent.
You will struggle to find better pub food locally.

Read moreI don't write reviews as a rule - but I am making. an exception for this restaurant as I was so disappointed. The staff were friendly. The venue lacked a bit of. atmosphere. Our starters. were fine- no complaints. there. My wife and I ordered steak. This was the worst steak we've ever had in a restaurant. It was tasteless and rubbery. I had my suspicions as soon as I saw the steak had been sliced beforehand, I suspect I may have needed a chain saw to cut it otherwise. Really disappointing after paying £29 pounds each. The waitress looked at our plates and concluded from our leavings that one steak had been fully eaten. Not the case as my wife had put her steak onto my dish in disgust. We were subsequently charged half price for one of. the steaks. This is simply not good enough. I'd never, EVER...
