Was recommended to visit the Black Bull. Firstly the pub had a nice atmosphere and quick and pleasant service. Unfortunately, seemingly in contradiction to most of the reviews on here the food was sadly lacking. I ordered lasagne which was only OK. I wouldn't swear to it but it struck me that it probably was home made but had been defrosted and reheated (microwave) as it was a bit bland and seemed a little dry. My wife had Hunters Chicken. The portion size was very generous however the chicken breast was incredibly dry and one end was inedible (unchewable) on top of this the cheese on the top seemed to be a square of processed cheese. It certainly didn't seem to melt like normal cheese! This is unforgivable. My wife wanted desert as she was still hungry (having left most of her main). She ordered caramel apple pie and custard. Which she was enjoying until she hit the layer of gloopy frangipan type stuff. Which she doesn't like, I would have expected this to have been outlined as a constituent part. Also the custard was clearly out of a tin or carton, as no home made custard is that yellow! Nothing wrong with tinned custard except when you're paying £6 for it! This may have been an off night, or maybe we're too fussy, but we really didn't enjoy the food and would have preferred a Wetherspoon's! We didnt complain whilst in the restaurant as it's not something I...
Read moreAfter visiting The Black Bull Inn, whilst staying in Runswick Bay. I cannot speak highly enough of this fantastic Inn. The welcome we received was very friendly, and the menu was very extensive even in these covid-19 times. I ordered the 16oz T-bone steak which at £25 was not cheap, but after eating was worth every penny. The chef cooked the steak perfectly for my medium rare taste. The chips/onion rings, mushrooms and tomatoes were all very well cooked with a plentiful portion. My wife had the steak and Ale pie, which she again raved about. Just to top things off, my pint of Theakstons was poured and tasted great. The bill was very reasonable and I would highly recommend this Inn to anyone. Complements to the management and...
Read moreCame here to celebrate a week’s glorious holiday and were blown away by the food and the welcome. This pub is a genuine classic serving an extensive menu of incredibly tasty food – from pub classics, through a specials board with some slightly more exotic fayre. Portions size is generous, and the staff friendly, helpful and human. The interior of the pub too have a real ‘authentic’ pub feel, which made our visit feel all the more satisfying. Pound for pound, the quality and service here are hard to beat frankly – we’ll be back again almost certainly – I quite fancy trying out their Sunday carvery – based on our weeknight experience it’ll probably blow our socks off!
(Oh yes, the chicken curry - properly spicy -...
