The Blacksmith's in Belsay is a popular cafe serving hot breakfast food, hot and cold lunches and a selection of home made cakes and bakes. Popular with locals and passing cyclists, the cafe an get a little bust at times, especially at weekends and during the holidays, however the good food and friendly service makes any small wait worthwhile. On our most recent visit we had an excellent smokes salmon sandwich with salad garnish and an equally good prawn sandwich. All taken with good coffee and a sweet treat.

Decent poached eggs on white bloomer (not sure if the bread is baked on site) but it was delicious, coffees are on the small side lemon drizzle cake was nice and moist. The blacksmiths could definitely score higher if they had dog friendly area inside, and menus on tables so customers aren't trying to decide at till. Also drinks being made on the spot before serving the next customer doesn't work well, definitely need extra member of staff.

Nice cosy spot for a locally sourced lunch, with good options sweet and savoury. The raspberry white chocolate cake is to die for, as is the price of the toasties. Expect a busier environment than you think on a weekend lunch, as it's a popular spot for cyclists. There is also nice art, I suppose.

Arrived just before it opened at 1000 (weekdays), having been here the previous Monday I knew I must try the “Lemon and Blueberry scone“ as they had all been gobbled up by other people on Monday.

It was amazing! If home made scones are you treat of choice then you will love them. Other flavours cherry, currents and I think cheese also.

Previous visit I had a bacon roll which was also excellent.

The staff are very friendly, walking paths and Belsay estate gardens and building near by. The main road is the A696 Newcastle to its junction with the A68 in the borders so a stop on the way out of Newcastle or back from a nice drive potential or just to get out of the city.

I arrived at 1000 and there was already a queue so that indicates a popularity and I would imagine regular customers.

Advice for motorcycle riders the parking is stone chipping so bring something to put under your bike’s side stand unless you have centre stand.

Toilets clean

Decent phone signal

On ground level so disabled ok

High chairs yes

I checked about large groups so the advice is to ring and book.

My visit was in connection with work and this review is independent of cafe and...

It’s very difficult to find a table in here no matter what day of the week or time of day you visit, this is testament to how popular and well loved it is! I hadn’t managed to eat here for many years since I can never get a table however when me and my friend visited on Tuesday afternoon we managed to find a table after a short wait. We each had the broccoli, brie and bacon quiche served with salad and chutney and it was absolutely gorgeous, probably the best quiche I’ve ever had and it all tasted homemade. We then had filter coffees and shared a slice of Victoria sponge cake which was decent but the quiche with salad was definitely the highlight! I’ll definitely be coming back soon to try another quiche, soup or perhaps a panini, you can’t go wrong though no matter what you choose as all the food seems to be of very high quality and proportionately priced - I didn’t find it cheap but nor was it expensive. I can’t wait for...

What a beautiful little place! I came in for some food before a walk. I got the Smoked salmon, cream cheese and rocket sandwich, which comes with crips. I thought ooh goody, that'll be perfect! However, I ordered this to take away with me, so I could enjoy it on my walk. I came on a paper plate in a paper bag . . . And the crisps had been opened and put on the plate. I can imagine this looks lovely on the plate if youre sitting in to eat but not as takeaway food. Had I known it wouldn't be in a takeout box or even wrapped up I would have just sat in to eat. I wasn't able to take this on my walk as I had to just carry it out flat in front of me rather than put it in my bag. I ended up sitting outside and eating it in the car. Which spoiled things a little. This won't deter me from returning though! Everything looked amazing and made with love. I will be back, I'll just make sure I...
