Stayed on the campsite run by the Bruce Arms Inn recently. This is a nice traditional style pub with cosy snug, small bar area and dining room. We were shown where to park our motorhome on the grassy hardstanding with ehu, which was fine. There were about 8 or 9 other campervans, motorhomes & caravans on site when we arrived on the Friday afternoon. We were booked for the weekend. But by Saturday afternoon the field was rammed with motorhomes, caravans, campervans and a few tents. Unfortunately four caravans set themselves up in the centre of the field in a square and let their kids run riot without supervision. They raced up and down the track on their bikes in front of our motorhome & into the full carpark where cars & vans were coming and going regularly. I was surprised one of them didn't get reversed over. Two of the young boys then started gathering heaps of stones from the path and throwing them, one hitting our bumper, which I then had to go outside & ask them to stop. We had booked a table for dinner in the pub, but found we had to climb over several dogs in the bar area to get to the bar. It states it's a dog friendly pub, which is fine, we love dogs, but there were far too many in there for such a small bar area on a busy weekend evening. The food was good, reasonably priced, but on looking over the paper menu we were given on arrival the next morning we realised they'd not served us the onion rings which was part of the meal. I also had an upset stomach the next morning which I'm assuming I picked up a germ from the meal I'd eaten in the pub. I therefore cancelled our table booking for Sunday lunch with them. The worst thing about our stay was the single toilet available each for men & women which was always busy as there were far too many people booked onto the site for so few facilities. My husband said there was no soap in the men's toilet during our stay. We decided to cut our stay short as we didnt feel relaxed at all. Its a shame as there arent many pubs offering camping with hardstanding & ehu, fresh water & Elsan point at a reasonable price, but for the reasons given above we won't be returning to the Bruce...
Read moreMyself and a friend stayed at the Bruce Arms over the early May bank holiday weekend and it was brilliant. Despite us not contacting the pub about availability until late on the Friday they very kindly fitted us in.
The pub/campsite is a few miles East of Pewsey (which has rail and bus connections) and is within easy access of the Kennet and Avon Canal which lies to the North of the pub.
We arrived on foot about 19:45 (took about 40 minutes to walk from Pewsey train station) and received a warm welcome. The pub was bustling with a mixture of locals and other guests which was lovely to see.
The campsite is flat, level and well maintained with a very well maintained and equipped toilet/shower block which also boasts a microwave and washing machine.
We ordered food from the pub and not only was it delicious (as other reviews have said the chips are among the best I've had) but probably the most reasonably priced pub food I've had in decades. I think I paid about £15 in total for a main and starter, both of which were very well made and generously portioned. You really don't get value like that often any more.
Speaking of value for money the campsite itself cost us only £9 each, which is outstanding value for money.
Overall I could not be happier with my stay at the Bruce Arms. 100% would recommend and will return...
Read moreHow on earth has this place got 4.4 stars? It is definitely NOT a cosy quaint pub, it is sparse at best and the individual toilets open directly off the "lounge" area...gross!! Ate at the pub as it's what I would expect to do if staying on a pub site, there is no incentive to do so, in fact they really should pay you to eat there... Lesson learned! Half cooked sausages and "smash" instant mash served in a cracked bowl, definitely NOT my idea of good home cooked food! But there was an England match on, which the"chef" / manager was sitting watching in the pub in his chef attire!!! As far as camping goes, it is a field with as many vehicles and tents crammed in, no specific pitches, just find a gap and hope you can attach to an EHU... But it's ok the manager said, I can get a splitter if there aren't any free!!!! At£25 a night, paid up front it is a proper earner for him, and there are long term residents there as well!! 1 male and 1 female toilet and shower, which is totally disgusting!! Not clean, female toilet blocked and not flushing! I was warned off from using the shower by another lady who came out looking quite ill!!! All in all DO NOT GO here to...
