We had just finished our circular walk in the green Cheshire countryside on a beautiful sunny Sunday and fancied a cold drink so we detoured to the Bulls Head pub. Having recently reopened due to the Covid-19 lockdown we had to enter the pub first to give our details for check and trace and then were escorted to a table. We decided to go outside as the weather was quite warm and we were at first only going to have a drink. Each table has a QR code on which you use your phone camera to scan and you are taken to the menu where you choose your drinks and any food and pay online and they are brought to your table. All this made us feel very safe as they were following government advice. We have visited some places where no one is following the advice. We chose 2 pints of San Miguel and were tempted by some starters of garlic prawns halloumi fries and 2 portions of chicken wings. No sooner had we completed the order online than two beautifully cold pints of San Miguel were brought to the table served in proper San Miguel glasses see photo. They were so cold that we had to put them straight down on the table after taking them off the tray they were brought to the table on. Soon after the food arrived. Gorgeous!!!! Juicy garlic prawns in butter. So tasty. Halloumi fries with a peppery sauce and the beautifully cooked chicken wings covered in a sticky barbeque sauce. All these accompanied the drinks perfectly. Unfortunately I was driving home or I would have had another drink! Thank you for a lovely end to our Cheshire walk. We will be back to sample the rest of the menu. From what we saw being brought out it all looked fantastic especially the Sunday roast dinners with 2 Yorkshire...
Read moreSuch a shame as I really wanted to love this place as the setting and location is stunning.
However, we stopped by on Monday afternoon for a few drinks and some food. The beer was good and the bar staff excellent (thats the one star) but the food was a massive let down - the garlic bread with cheese came and it was 2 rounds of white toast, some sort of garlic butter and melted cheese on top. Not what we expected! It did make us wonder what the garlic bread without the cheese would be.
Then we had the burger, this wasn't much better. The bun of the burger was a White Oven Bottom Muffin / Roll which in its self is a cardinal sin. The coleslaw looked like it had been out for awhile and was a yellow colour on the top and white when you removed the top layer - didn't even risk trying it. The only other item on the plate were the chips. It looked like the chips they had given us were the end of a batch as there were about 4 each that we could eat, the rest were crusty ends and small fried bits.
We ate what we could and left very disappointed and wished we had gone to another pub that's local as we had...
Read moreThe quality of the food seems to have slipped since my last visit, the Crispy pickled anchovies, lemon mayonnaise (gf) 5.95, crispy but overcooked, wouldn't have recognised the offering as anchovies, just salty and dried up. The main course, Grilled sea bass, cockle cream sauce, lemon potato cake (gf) 22.95, was the big disappointment. The cockle cream sauce sounds exciting, but bland. The Grilled sea bass, looked dried up when it arrived and it was dried up, in two minds whether to send it back, should have done in hindsight. The best part of the meal was the potato cake. Accompanied by a bland New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Overall a bland and over cooked experience...... as a recommendation I'd steer clear of the fish, they don't seem to know how to cook it, unless you go for the bog standard battered fish which is difficult to get wrong... And when paying the the bill, they never asked if I enjoyed the food or what I thought of it. I can only assume they don't bother asking as they already know. very disappointing, won't be going again or recommending to anyone, shame as it's...
