Beautiful day which makes its countryside setting even more special. Cool inside on the hot day but umbrella shaded tables outside if you prefer. Pleasant staff served us our poor value food. Ploughman's lunch was fresh but not great value in its self. You need fresh cob loaf not focaccia, there was very little ham, more like a sliver than the thick ham you need to cut into rather than pull apart and didn't taste as if cut 'off the bone'. And it was served on a board not a plate a pet hate but others might find it enhances their eating experience, we don't. Trout was another meal. It was the centre portion cut from a half fillet on a bed of cream sauce with peas. There were far too many peas. It was almost laughable to see this bit of grilled fish floating on a sea of green. Steak pie and chips. Not a proper pie just a very flakey topping on a bowl of stew. The cooking of the filling in the enclosed pastry pie gives it a different flavours than a ring of dry pastry put onto of a bowl of stew. The pastry too wasn't home made I think. Food was generally disappointing for the prices charged BUT by today's standards we will be paying select prices for average food. So maybe judge it in that light. It's not clever to serve up food as being cutting edge presentation when it just tastes average. That drops the rating in my mind which is a pity as it's a lovely pub in a...
Read moreI chose this hotel because it was a good overnight stay to break the journey down to the West Country. I had a very friendly welcome from a lovely young member of staff, and directed to my room. I had mixed feelings on this as it was the attic room, very low sloping ceilings - so low they were padded with foam for when you bang your head, which if you are 5 foot 10 like me and don't keep your wits about you, you will do - a lot. The sink was in the room rather than the bathroom and underneath the slopey bit which meant I had to hold my head at a 45 degree angle when washing my face etc. The bed was also right under a slopey bit so you had to remember not to sit up quickly, and to get in and out of the bed at an angle. Same with the sofa in the little sitting area, you were fine as long as you kept your head down. I think If I had been staying for more than one night I would have asked to be moved. |However it was nice and clean, and the bar area downstairs was lovely with a good choice of meals on offer. |My stay wasn't cheap and because of the room I wasn't convinced I got good value, but the place is certainly well worth...
Read moreWe stayed here for a week whilst visiting Bath. The room was a very good size, beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. The room was serviced every day. We hadn't booked with breakfast or evening meals, however, the food was so good we ate here every breakfast and dinner. The breakfast was a very good size with 2 courses, tea or coffee, fresh orange juice and plenty of toast. There was a good choice for dinner and again the portion sizes were good. We ate most things on the menu and they were all delicious. The service was excellent, everyone was very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They made our stay a real pleasure. The atmosphere in the bar was lovely too, we enjoyed relaxing in the evening with a nice glass of brandy. The drive into Bath was a pleasant 15 minutes, then we used the park and ride, which work well for us. There are plenty of other places to visit a short drive from the pub. We visited both Cheddar gorge and Wells, both of which were stunning. We would highly recommend staying here and hope we get the opportunity...
