Read moreI've been holidaying in Maiden Newton for several years and it's been great to see how Saxon and the team have evolved The Chalk and Cheese to the fantastic venue it now is. Many "local" pubs aren't particularly welcoming to visitors and you get that tumbleweed moment when a stranger walks in, but here you're made to feel like a regular and nothing is too much. A lovely atmosphere, well decorated and comfortable while maintaining its traditional charm, (very) dog friendly with a lovely real fire in the winter. They host regular live music and other events making it a real community hub and the weekly guest beer is always worth trying. There are 2 gardens to choose from with the rear 'secret' garden the perfect spot for a sundowner (Saxon makes a great Espresso Martini). As for the food!!! Menu is limited but perfectly put together to cater to all tastes from Ham, egg and chips to Wild Mushroom Quesadillas (with of course the ubiquitous choice of burgers too). Lunchtimes there is also a good choice of baguettes (try the fish gougon with the chefs own recipe GF batter made with cider) - a refreshing change when nowadays many places only offer gastro dining and 'bar snacks'at lunch. I look forward to returning and see what further improvements and innovations...
