Me and my partner visited the pub as we were staying in the area on a short break away. On entering we noticed very dated decor which is understandable due to the age of the place but it has a feel/smell to it like it hasnt been cleaned for a while.
Ordered a nacho chilli starter, now it did state it comes with a garlic sauce but ive never had it smothered all over the dish before like it was served to us, most places put a bit on the side/top or in a separate dish so you can limit how much you want but on this occasion it was smothered all over, taking up half the dish which in turn made the nachos all soggy/floppy and just not nice.
Starter of fried brie was also ordered:- The brie itself was nice, cant go wrong with deep fried brie. Side salad was basic iceberg lettuce, tomato and cucumber which didnt look to fresh in my opinion and the chutney/pickle was very minimal and from a jar in my opinion.
Onto the Mains:- Lamb Kebab skewers ordered, the only seasoning we could taste on the lamb was salt and alot of it. No exaggeration when i say it tasted like the sea, unpleasant and uneatable. Served the same sauce as with the starter.
Other main was the yorkshire loaf tin, sausages, veg and mash. Taste on the whole was ok, but just that. Mash had been clearly microwaved to the point it was congealed and crispy at points around the edges. Veg was in a bowl and boiled to inch of its life, so watery and floppy, all goodness cooked out of it. Basically a meal that reminded me of a meal id do in my younger days at home where id pre cook it and then hours later re heat it. Basic gravy that tasted like bisto and sausages were cumberland i believe, these tasted nice to be fair but again could tell they had been reheated and over done.
After raising the issue with staff i stated i wouldnt be paying for that food as it wasnt no where near the standard expected. Waitress admitted it was pre cooked and then microwaved.
Let me be fair and say this might have been a one off bad day that we were unlucky to experience but felt it was right to share a true review so people can make up there own minds.
Starters and main which come out less than 20 minutes after ordering is clearly a ping in a microwave job, and whilst i understand restaurants do this, it could have been disguised better or a least not done to much.
Will say the young waitress was very politely and couldnt say sorry enough.
After leaving we looked up the food standard agency rating and the venue...
Read moreI’m not sure if we went to the same place as the coachman everyone else seems to have reviewed. I have given 1 star as it isn’t possible to give less. We went for a meal this evening and were all looking forward to it. We arrived and were seated at a table with plywood screwed onto the table top. Our chairs were broken and wobbly and not far from collapse. Pre meal we were served drinks. A g&t and a glass of water were fine. The j20 with lemonade was actually j20 and water. And the 2 cokes were flat, as were the next 2 cokes served in replacement (only with less taste than the first). Then came the meal. Picked from a rather overpriced and uninspired menu (when compared with other local restaurants). Out came 4 starters. Pate with anaemic white bread which was ok. Shrimp and mackerel starters with a meagre salad and cheap lightly coloured tomatoes and cheap cucumber slices which was again ok. Garlic mushrooms starter served with (perhaps) a packet sauce which was ok. I say ok for all the starters and not good because if I said good it would justify them and their price. Main courses for 5 people. Every single main had issues and were poor. Really poor. And expensive! I’d opted for fish and chips from the uninspired menu as I thought it was a safe bet. How wrong I was. I simply couldn’t eat it. You eat with your eyes and this plate looked like a roadkill hedgehog had crawled onto it and died right there. Chips were black, some were soggy, some were like cat biscuits. Steak was served with some sauce already on the steak (most people like to add their own sauce, or have none at all!) I really cannot describe properly how disappointed all 5 of us were with the meal. In fairness we weren’t charged for our main meals but still paid £50 for 4 starters, 4 drinks and a glass of water. Like I said. The Coachman is expensive. It’s just a shame that the food doesn’t come anywhere near matching the fancy prices. Perhaps this evening was just a one off and I sincerely hope so. But if it’s the general standard then I hope that a few more guests will feel the need to offer their honest reviews. There are plenty of wonderful places to eat out in the Scarborough area. The competition is strong. So if anything a few negative reviews might just make these lacklustre places pull...
Read moreVisited here for a Sunday Carvery, we were greeted by a lovely guy who showed us to the restaurant side. We were given a menu each and asked for out drinks order. Drinks arrived shortly after and then there was a wait.... quite a substantial wait considering there was only 8 items on the menu.
While we were waiting, it gave us time to look around the room and check the staff interactions. One of the chefs was more interested in the football playing on his phone, which was loud enough to hear across the room. A waitress that clearly had little to no experience as she spent most of the time stood looking awkward by the door.
Eventually the food order was taken, the waitress gave the chefs the heads up for two more carveries, at which point they both left the counter... couple of mins of waiting for a chef to come back (who checked the football first) then sliced up the meat (good portions) to be handed a good sized plate for the rest of the trimmings. Food was pretty good, a few tweaks I would have made but they were personal preferences.
As the mains were good, we decided to order a desert. Turns out we should have left it at the mains. Looks like the items for desert are cheaply bought in, with little flavour and a strange texture on the cheesecake. Also tried the coulis on this and it tasted like nail varnish remover, it had such a strong acidic chemical taste it was revolting.
We alerted the waitress who said she would mention it and find out what the coulis was. We waited... Chef was still watching football, waitress left with our deserts and returned to awkwardly stand by the door... She then refused to look at our table... so we waited a little longer.... Eventually we came to the realisation that the waitress wasn't going to return to our table.
We moved back towards the bar area and spoke to one of the managers. Turns out none of the feedback was passed across. We explained how bad the cheesecake was and how it was barely eaten. We asked about the coulis and was told "it's a new raspberry one from a new supplier". I am sorry but that supplier must have been superdrug as that cannot have been a reputable food supplier. Or alternatively the food standards are that bad, what was coulis has gone off and fermented.
