Stopped off at Staindrop on our way to Barnard Castle. It's a lovely little farming village that my parents and grandparents would often bring us to for picnics by the river and plodging with our nets for fish as children (Bullheads mainly, but I even caught a few small trout which often gave my grandparents as much of a surprise as it did the trout).
However, now it's best to just take a walk along the river and take in the sights, sounds and smells.
Once you've had a good look round, The Country Tea Shop & Restaurant is a great place to sit and relax with a cup of tea and (very) fresh cheese scone with cream cheese and tomato chutney.
The scones were fresh out of the oven, smelled fantastic and tasted even better. I could have eaten the whole batch myself.
The tea shop is everything you'd expect in a small farming village. Very clean, places set aside for regulars and the staff were very friendly and polite.
The even do Sunday Roast dinners, but it's advisable to book in advance as I can imagine they would be...
Read moreWas planning a trip to Raby Castle, and decided to find somewhere we could go to, to eat after, with Raby Castle not really offering anything substantial in its Yurt Cafe. Found this place, and we called in. The service was brilliant. A young waiting staff team, who offered impeccable service. They were prompt and polite serving us, and they had a great rapport with their regulars, too. Excellent menu selection, offering lighter optins through to more substantial options, which was what we were after. Opted for homemade pie, chips and beans and then lemon cake. Both were good and as expected. Tidy and clean space. Pot of tea came with extra hot water and was given some scissors to open my sauce sachets. It's the little touches like this that make a difference. I'd definitely call in again if I the area. Had a canny little turn over and I can see why. After about 2:15 they stop serving main meals (understandably as it closes at 3pm) but still serve cake and tea etc, so if your wanting a main meal give...
Read moreMy hubby &I drove past the tea room in Staindrop, & decided to go in. I think if expecting customers should have a reserved on the table, to make things easier. The tea room gets quite busy. Customer service is ok, but the best one was the man taking payments. I had the sweet potato & chickpea curry with rice & naan bread. For me, the curry was delicious with heat, but this needs to be said when someone orders that it is spicy. I had a Cappuccino and a Pepsi max, & my hubby had prawn sandwich with a side salad & water. cost in total, £24.20 There was quite a selection of dishes, sandwiches, soup,scones... I/we would definitely come back again. The tea room had air conditioning, which was lovely on a hot day as today, 29/04/25, Tuesday. The tea room is on Front Street, in Staindrop. There are a couple of...
