This place is a hidden gem!

It's not far off the Burton Bradstock to Weymouth road, just a mile from Swyre - definitely worth a diversion.

It's a good, proper, countryside boozer that also serves great food at a reasonable price.

Three Ales on tap from the local brewery Palmers of Bridport, one should suit your tastes. A fair selection of other drinks too, but I didn't get further than the IPA.

The building is picture postcard / chocolate box inside and out, front and back. Beautiful stone topped with thatch and an abundance of planters at the front. Around the back as small car park with a very well maintained, generous, beautiful garden with a lovely view over the Bride Valley.

Inside the main room with the bar is manorial in proportion. Wooden beams, bug fireplace, old oak tables a beautiful setting to be served. You may need to wait a few minutes to be served, but worth the wait as service is good, helping and friendly. Two further rooms flank the main bar, and clean modern toilets towards the rear out to the garden.

The menu is traditional pub fayre, pie of the day, ham and egg, vegetable quiche, fish and chips....... its presentation is unpretentious and clean, concentrating on excellent ingredients cooked very, very well. The pies are generous in meat, and packed with flavours that are so good - simply served with buttery mash and peas. So good I had to return another night to try another flavour!

Such a breath of fresh air - just a straightforward, beautiful place. Not gastro, not mass produced, not cheap and cheerful, just right!

I heartily...

We stayed in a lovely cottage in the area, and after scouring the local area for a mid week pub tea we came across this place for just honest pub grub without being ripped off with the price. In fact we visited twice.||||Yep, it’s not a fancy dancy salad garni sort of food, with a splurge of something blobbed on your plate to justify the price, it’s uncomplicated pub grub. Where we live our local pub serves fantastic food of which we visit at least a couple times a month, but that meal experience is quite pricey when you include the cost of drinks. The Crown was at least half the price of our local, just to be fed some food.||||We felt that The Crown was filling a gap in the market. They served decent food at a fair price. We probably wouldn’t go there for a Sunday lunch for example but for a mid week tea it was fine.||We tried to book at another local pub but the landlord seemed to get a thrill in telling us he was full up, that pub was probably 3 times the price. We did have a pub tea at another local pub but we grateful we were sat down when we got the bill, it just was not worth the artistic food placed just so on the plate!||||I think the Crown could perhaps up its game a bit? It’s a good location and very nice inside. The food was a bit out of the freezer type, but it was cooked well and we didn’t feel cheated.||For tea it’s fine. For special event...

The wife and I were passing through in our motorhome and I was approached by Paul (landlord) to see if we were staying the night, as only one motorhome spot available, and somebody had already booked in. I didn't know that they did stopovers, but I will certainly be going back. We entered the lovely bar area, Lynn was present and we got a lovely ,smiley welcome. You can feel the history the moment you walk in.. Eureka ! they have Palmers of Bridport on tap, my favourite brewery. I had a pint of Copper in a dimpled handle and the good lady had a pint of Copper shandy, dimpled half pint glasses are also available. We sat comfortably in chairs, a cushion was provided willingly for the wife's back ailment. We thoroughly enjoyed a lovely, amiable conversation with Lynn, and unusually I ordered a portion of chips ( £4 , a good price ) . Now, the wife normally doesn't eat chips, but tried one and said they were the finest she had ever eaten !!!! and she is incredibly picky. She had a few more, so I had to order another portion and they truly were that good. All in all, a fabulous stop at a really great pub, with lovely people, and fantastic views from the garden overlooking the valley. As Arnie said .......

The Crown is the quintessential English country pub. 15th century, Thatched and oak beams. The service and drinks were very good and the food was exceptional. The taste was outstanding. I had the fish and chips main and it was the best ever. If I can just describe the mushy peas. You know when you shell fresh peas yourself and only about half make it to the pan because they tasted so good you ate them straight from the pod? Well the mushy peas was like those peas warmed and mashed.

A traditional pub, an excellent selection of beers, had fish and chips with mushy peas and home made Tartar sauce, it was delicious, crispy chunky chips and the fish was cooked in a beer batter. Has a roomy beer garden, plenty of parking and warm welcome for doggies.

Lovely pub this one! Just what we needed after a day at Hive Beach. Ali who served us was top draw and super welcoming! Food was great, gammon and apple cake for me as shown, my wife had the cottage pie and brownie, equally great! Highly recommended
