Having done a recce some days previously we decided to have our group Christmas Dinner here. Everyone, without exception, thoroughly enjoyed the experience, that is both the meal itself & the warm considerate reception provided by the staff. We had requested a certain table that suited our needs, some not as mobile as others. Upon entering this unpretentious 16th century pub we saw our table, all laid out as you would do at home on Christmas Day. That, in itself, alaid any fears that this was going to be anything other than a pleasurable experince. Food wise 'Christmas Dinner' so typical Christmas fare. Prawns were full of flavour, Parsnip soup, too sweet for me, but those who had it gave it a big thumbs up. The main course came out without the veg on the plate, there was that much of it that 2 people thought it was the complete meal !! Pigs in,... well not quite,.. these were Not the cocktail sausages that so many places use,... these were 'Gert Big Boars !!! ',... Full size tasty local meaty sausages, ample slices of meat, Stuffing that was extreemly 'moreish' & hidden away beneath was scrumptious roasted parsnip which still retained it's flavour having not been drowned in honey. Meat, Beef & Turkey, was moist & tender without being overdone. The veggies were perfect, slightly 'al dente' obviously fresh, full of colour & flavour. "If you want more, just ask",...we did ! They were that good that even those who had already cleared their plate had another portion which we covered in the endless supply of rich gravy. Most had the Christmas pud, but those of us who had the Poached Pear were treated to a delightful sweet. Half a pear with an equally large portion of solid fresh local cream surrounded by a moat of Mulled Wine Sauce. From the moment we entered the pub, at no time did we feel pressurised. Although the staff 'were' keeping a discrete eye on our progress which in turn meant that as soon as all had finished a course, the plates vanished in a flash. Again, 'no rush' and time was allowed for the course to settle before the next was presented,... in truth,.. the chef was 'finishing' the next course. Furthermore, the simple touch of having enough staff on hand so that everyone was served within moments of each other ensured that the meal flowed easily. This is a proper country pub, they are not turning over dozens of barrels a week. As such in Winter there is not a lot of real ale on tap. Having said that, you therefore knew that your pint was fresh & had not been sitting in the pipeline since the night before, it was perfect. From the crystal clear clean glass to the golden liquid with it's snow white head. A Tribute indeed. For info, our recce consisted of 2 scruffy souls calling in midweek for a pint & a shared bowl of chips. We were therefore, not giving the appearance of being potential customers bringing in a group. This in turn reflects the fact that this is the pub's normal standard. Excellent. A Big Thank You To All, Both Front &...

If this isn't the best place for Sunday lunch then l don't know where is. Excellent service and a Sunday lunch without equal. The vegetables were perfectly cooked and presented, a Yorkshire pudding to dies for and proper roast potatoes. The meat - we had a pork and a couple of beef dinners - was very tasty. Great meal and exceptional value. Highly recommended

Returned after too long away and the drop started that the knives aren't sharp enough! This made the very tender beef difficult to cut and the crisp potatoes even harder. Sadly despite being the second people in we waited over half an hour for our meals. The potatoes were delicious but not very hot and there really wasn't enough gravy. The staff are great, the meat wonderful and we could take the dog. Lost a...

Booked a table as it’s always busy and BOY what a treat!!!!!! Greeted pleasantly on entry, table ready, food took a little while to be served but not so long that you noticed. When food arrived it was absolutely delicious beautifully cooked and presented roast beef and the chicken my family had, veg had an al dente bite so perfectly cooked with plenty of taste, gravy was out of this world. Desserts were varied and vegan option was choice of sorbets No one rushed us and when we were ready to leave we’re pleasantly surprised at the bill it was lower than expected for the quality we’d enjoyed. Upon leaving we were shocked that we’d been sat almost 2 hours and not noticed. Huge thanks to everyone who...

Busy local pub in St.Ewe, not far from Lost Gardens of Heilgan. Booked ahead for a 18.30 table and though initially quiet became quite busy al ittle later. Nice cosy atmosphere with friendly helpful & efficient staff. Simple menu with a number of daily specials with seasonal produce. They can cater for gluten free and we both had gf fish & chips which was exceptional. Gf batter was ... brilliant! Good selection of local (St.Austell) beer. The pub & eating area is dog friendly, and you can expect other dogs there too. The slightly rough car park is a reasonable size, but it does help if drivers park sensibly so more can fit in, as the roads near the pub are narrow and not best suited for overflow parking!
