It's a nice pub.. in a handy location for walking whitbarrow.. I ended a ten mile walk here with a Guinness, which was well earned! I'm going to be scrupulously fair with this review.... so. We'll start with the pros: Nice pub, busy, good atmosphere, staff were helpful.. decor nice.. (it's that 'everything wooden painted grey' vibe that you get a lot these days.. but it looks good. I waited seconds to be served, and was presented with a pint of Guinness.. well poured, clean glass, two finger head (no bubbles) etc etc. It tasted good.
Cons: The pint of Guinness was £6.70
Not really a lot to say other than that.. I mean.. I have actually run a bar/restaurant myself, and I'm very aware of the challenges facing the hospitality sector.. but I don't feel like that is a fair price for a pint of Guinness in 2023. Of course, when I was told how much it was, it was sitting in front of me on the bar.. and I'm English, so nothing was said.. and it did taste good.. and perhaps that is the going rate..? (I think this pub technically falls in the Lakes national park..? Does that bring with it a premium?) .. I have had a Guinness in a trendy 'hipster' gaff in SW London that was cheaper.. I walked the C2C in June.. and had a Guinness at the end of each day.. and didn't manage to find one as expensive . And I drank in three national parks... in tourist hotspots.. anyway. I'm ranting now... but it's fair to say I was very sad.
Chalk boards with prices on are a good...
Read moreOn a whim after work one Sunday I thought I am off up to the lakes....I took no luggage or anything but thought if I get to Penrith in time I can get the rest of my toiletries and a few t shirts another pair of shorts and a bag of economy knickers ....haha! ..but never booked anywhere....sensible eh ! However I went on line and thought somewhere cheap and cheerful will do...so dip dip dip...landed right here. Altho off the beaten track it made me realise how great places can exist on the outer borders too. I loved it !! My room was FAB! and really genuinely Victorian style...like something from the programme Upstairs Downstairs from years ago with Edwardian style absolute antique furniture and the most comfy solid brass massive bed ...Great modern bathroom and spotlessly clean. Very chilled and layed back atmosphere and great breakfast . Can't fault it at all and unbelievable value for money ...and so peaceful . Would defo book there again for sure . Good to know it's there's for when I fancy obsconding up there...
Read moreCame in here on a Tuesday for dinner in August with the two kids, while staying at local campsite.
Lovely welcoming staff and a homely feeling to this pub. Great selection of beers and ales. Had a pint of Swan Blonde, which was lovely and smooth.
Kids weren't too hungry so my youngest ordered the brisket loaded fries from the starters and they did my eldest a kids' portion of Mac and Cheese.
I had the pulled beef brisket and mushroom pie.
Loaded fries was a massive portion! Can't believe it's a starter as I couldn't imagine eating much else after it. The brisket was very tender and BBQ sauce flavour was good.
My pie was excellent. Generous filling with lots of beef. The greens were very well cooked. Gravy was a little on the salty side and the fat chips could have done with a couple of minutes longer in the frier as some were a little underdone. Minor things. Rest of the meal was lovely.
