I so wanted to give a good review of the Devon and Cornwall-my mother was publican there years ago, and I am fond of it. ||Good points-pub good, a real, proper pub, of the sort almost extinct in many areas. Had a bath and shower. One mark for each of these.||No other marks given. For any price, but especially £80 a night, it was poor, Pub noise till closing, and then drunk guests arguing and having love life troubles in the corridor of the accommodation, I can not fault the pub for-it's just bad luck it happened while we were there. However, the bed was TERRIBLE! The worst bed I have slept in these last forty years! A very poor, cheap mattress, and - in the bedroom where we were, very poorly positioned, as the sloping floor meant we were at an uncomfortable angle with head down all night. Well, not all night- from the time the corridor racket stopped at about 1 am, to the time I had to get up as I had such back ache at 5am-so 4 hours, was an uncomfortable, wakeful, increasingly painful 'night'. The room was very small with one small rickety cheap self-assembly wardrobe, only one bedside table and light (double bed) -not enough room for another. It amused me that the sash window was exactly as I remembered it, too- same crack and broken sash so that it needed propping open! So, a bad night that gave us both backache and little sleep. We had to leave the next morning so had to be up before we could face the full English breakfast. We had tea and cereal/toast - butter only provided, no marmalade or jam. We also had to say the time we were going to breakfast the evening before, .The staff were helpful and nice throughout. So, not worth £80. Lesson learnt! Travelodge/premier inn next time- guaranteed a good bed and only £30 or so, and you please yourself for breakfast. I believe there is one in...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed 2 nights over 10-11th December as we were working at nearby Mount Edgecumbe house. This was the closest and that was the original reason for selecting this pub. The building is old and the rooms are a bit higgley-piggeldy but that's the charm of an old building. It has 5 letting rooms - which are gradually being modernised. Our room was tired but clean and overlooked the road outside - but there was very little traffic noise in the room. The room itself was quite triangular - but that was the shape of the building and added to its charm. Mike and Kat had only taken over the pub 5 weeks previously and clearly they had settled in well with the locals, and were great hosts. Due to COVID their chef/cook was off and so Kat was catering. The food was great both nights and the breakfast (full English) was good quality food, cooked well. The evening menu is standard pub food with nothing fancy but I think it is better to limit the menu and do it well than try to please everybody and produce a substandard meal. In short, if my wife and I are travelling that way again we'll...
Read moreAt first thought it didn't look too bad but looks can be deceiving. Thought for the price rooms would be a little better. Shower was dreadful with poor water flow and temperature. The bed although comfy had some rubbish pillows. As one of the only places to eat in the village we decided to eat in. We ordered our meals 2 of us having steaks then the others having a lasagne and a burger. Food took a little while to arrive but once on the table looked good but once again looks can be deceiving. To start offthe lasagne was cold then my partner said her steak tasted funny as soon as she'd said that I had another bit of mine which was clearly off as it tasted sour . Subsequently we refused to pay for the food and retired to our rooms. We both had a shocking night as the room was very noisy and I was very ill. At breakfast the following morning neither my partner or myself had breakfast as we felt awful. My mother found a lovely long blond hair in her breakfast and that was it time to get out of there. Will definitely not be returning under no...
