This is my local pub, now called the Docks and opened under new management. It has a bar, that one a CAMRA award a few years ago, for authenticity ie retained in the style of an old English pub bar. It has a restaurant, that has been closed due to COVID BUT should reopen soon with a new chef, who Iโm told by locals in the know, is supposed to be very good. Thereโs and area for more semi formal dining AND my favourite spot, less formal next to a log fire with 3 tables. Dogs are always welcome and the locals are always very friendly and chatty.
Pre-COVID the restaurant was very good and always packed, bookings absolutely necessary, SO Iโm hoping the restaurant returns as good or better.
There is a beer garden which is a nice large space with an awning so you can have a drink outside even in the unpredictable Borders weather ๐.
Thereโs a large car park, away from the B4579, opposite St Maryโs the Virgin (CofE), which was first mentioned in Papal tax records in 1291 according to Wikipedia. The church yard has some very beautiful and very old Yew trees, well worth a look if youโre visiting the pub/restaurant. The inside of the church is also worth a look.
If yourโre around for a while and fond of walking, one of the best sections of Offaโs dyke is nearby, the other side of Selattyn Hill. The Shropshire Way goes through the field in front of my house (pop in and say a socially distanced hi) and the dyke is a max 30 minute walk from the pub...
ย ย ย Read moreThe Docks is a very warm, cosy, inviting and comfortable pub formerly known as The Cross Keys. It is steeped in history and dates back to the 17th/18th century and is a extremely attractive place inside and out. It has lovely gardens with seating area outside and a covered patio area as well. The decor is pleasing and elegant inside and full of beams and fires. Great food and well kept real ales with Station Storehouse Bitter and Three Tuns ale too which I sampled and it was perfect. Becky and Shaun the owners and landlords are very welcoming, friendly and helpful along with the staff as well. Geoff the chef is good at what he prepares in the kitchen and uses good fresh local sourced produce as well. Highly recommend this lovely historical pub and the location in Selattyn is idyllic and pretty. A big thank you to Becky, Shaun and all the staff for a great service and...
ย ย ย Read moreWhat a fantastic Sunday lunch (including homegrown vegetables and homemade horseradish. It was a great opportunity to visit, as my friend was down from Newcastle Upon Tyne. She was as impressed as I was! Nothing was too much trouble including water for her dog! (Thanks Shaun!) Although we had booked inside, we sat outside in the sunshine. The menu is broad from light bites to delicious seafood, meat or vegetable dishes. Something for everyone. You have to have a dessertโฆ. My husband turned up just at the point of ordering and so three delicious desserts were served. I had the real Sherry trifle and it was fabulous! If you are passing by Oswestry, this is a true country village treat! We are looking forward to frequenting this eatery in the future. Thanks to Becky and Shaun as well as Geoff, the...
