Latest Update:
Visited again in August 2021: Extremely pleased with the Sunday roast. We felt there was an improvement in the roast beef this time but we would prefer the meat less rare. Perhaps we should have asked. The owners are very pleasant and we would recommend the Duke for Sunday lunch. We visited the pub for Sunday Roast on ?May 2nd. Outdoor seating was arranged well, considering covid rules are in place. Staff and owners were very pleasant and friendly and I certainly felt welcomed. We had a choice of being under a marque or in the garden.
Now for the criticism - sorry it had to be said. We ordered what I belived to be roast beef but the beef was not what I would have expected as it did not appear to be from a roasted joint and was actually not very tender. This was a pity as the rest of the food was excellent. The price was very good, particularly for a small roast and portions were quite adequate.
We chose to sit in the garden but unfortunately about a dozen people arrived, all with a dog. All were behaved apart from one very noisy small dog that the owner could not keep quiet. We also noticed at a nearby table that one or perhaps two small dogs were allowed to sit on a table and I don't think from a hygiene position that should be allowed, irrespective of size of animal.
I do hope when we go again for Sunday Roast that my points may have been addressed. I am really sorry to be critical particularly when you have recently reopened but it's intended as constructive criticism. I wish the owners much success with the business in the future as it was unfortunate they were affected so much during the past year or so.
Overall I thought the pub was very nice and this would most certainly be a favourite if I lived closer. Whoever reads this please visit the Duke at Bratton as I am sure...
Read moreWe had the misfortune of to eat here a few weeks ago . Initially the greeting on arrival was ok . Unfortunately it went downhill from here the female behind the bar had about as much personality as a wet blanket she was rude and clearly uninterested in looking after customers. We were eating outside as there was only 1 customer in the pub itself . Two horse riders arrived complete with the horses And got a very cold welcome from what we assumed was the landlord, frankly he is lucky he can be choosing his customers as there are not many. Finally after a long wait our sharing platter which was a starter arrived . It was fine but you can’t really go wrong with a packet of cold meats and some salad. Then to the main courses 1 x burger was ok. A chicken dish which was over cooked and uninviting on the plate proved to be pretty grim , at no time were we asked how our meals were , would we return NEVER again. As a retired license of some 30 years you guys need to give up now you haven’t got a clue on customer service , or quality food this is even more apparent in your rude response to...
Read moreWhat a great meal! Dropped in for Sunday lunch. The wait was negligible despite the place being pretty busy and when the food arrived, it was very good. For a start, it was HOT. The roast spuds and veg. were fine. To be absolutely fair, they didn't set the world alight, but they were certainly above average. Personally I am not a great fan of fried stuffing balls, though they did taste nice. The meat was the real clincher. Normally if the place makes any effort, it goes into the accompaniments, while the meat...... well it's just meat innit? The Duke is different. They REALLY pay attention to the meat and I can honestly say it was the tastiest and tenderest I have had, away from home. That goes for both my wife's beef and my pork. Absolutely unbeatable. And finally, after 35 years, I've found a place outside of Yorkshire that can make a Yorkshire Pudding worthy...
