We hadn't been here before but my partner's father chose it as a relatively central point to meet for a significant birthday celebration. It was a great choice! Plenty of parking, lots of space inside (it's a huge building), well attended decor and well maintained, well presented facilities make this a great venue. It has a good mix of quality but aged furniture that engenders a very cosy, country feel despite the very spacious interior. There were not many spare tables when we walked in but it did not feel crowded. I did notice they also had a pool table in it's own little room at the back of the pub. This would normally be a great draw for me, but we were at a family gathering where playing pool was not appropriate! The presence of a pool table however is a big plus point in my books. The bar serves a wide range of beers on tap, and the bar staff were very friendly. The waiting on staff are all quite young but also very friendly and extremely attentive without being "in your face". Dogs are welcome inside and there were many tables seated with canine family members, including our own. We were a party of 8 (including the dog!) and were served promptly and politely. Food was prepared and delivered quickly and all together and all as asked and was all delicious! Portion sizes are very generous - most of the starters would have served as mains in some places and the mains were equally generous. The sweet potato fries were really good... the only person who wasnt 100% happy ordered the Parma ham wrapped chicken breast with molten cheese on dauphinoise potatoes and thought it could have done with a little more sauce. The dauphinoise potato was susprisingly dry. Other than that, we were all very happy. 2 of us had the venison suet pudding which was delicious and filling one had a pizza which was tasty but huge - it had a thin base but it must have been 14" in diameter! The fish pie and the battered cod both went down well and the kids' meal chicken nuggets were quality nuggets made from chunks of chicken breast. We didn't sample desserts as the staff were happy to bring out a birthday cake which we'd baked and brought ourselves. They were happy to load it with sparkler fountains, light them and bring it out at the appropriate time, and provided plates and forks without complaint. We felt very well looked after and will definitely visit again.

Arriving late Sunday lunchtime, found a bustling pub with lots of families and groups with young children. The halloumi starter was nice enough, and while the pizza style garlic bread looked a bit pale, was soon scoffed. The belly pork cubes were crispy although the black pudding was dried. Rocket on everything! For mains, I had the fillet steak which was cooked as requested, but the twice cooked chips (isn't that how chips are supposed to be cooked?) were bland (and others going past looked the same) and the accompanying tomato unripe. The onion rings were nice. The Sunday roast dinner looked generous with a huge Yorkshire pudding on top. Burger went down well. Sausage and mash was ok, but the green beans were almost raw. Apple crumble for pudding was good. Service was ok. Overall pretty standard pub fare. Not sure I'd class as a gastro pub though, so perhaps a bit rich price-wise for what was delivered.

We arrived at 12.30 pm on a Monday, bit of a pungent smell of fire smoke,no problems. We seated ourselves as no one was around, then went to look for a menu,a nice guy helped us with this and soon we had a very pleasant waitress take our drinks order. We had noticed the fire was not fully lit and was venting smoke into the restaurant,so much we had to carry our food to another table. I understand no one had opened the FLUE rule 101,or knew how to apart from our waitress. Anyway a man entered where we were sitting and there was a lot of fire building going on,I assumed he was a Handyman until he started chalking up specials on the chalkboard. As we wanted to leave my 87 year old wanted to pay the bill,he said you can pay at the bar"and carried on writing. A few minutes later we were able to pay our bill via a WiFi terminal by a really apologetic person. Evidently the HANDYMAN WAS THE OWNER.?

Pre booked and ordered Christmas lunch at The Egerton Arms with my family today. Sadly I have to say what an awful experience it was!! I will start with the positives by saying the building is lovely and cosy and the girls serving were lovely. The owner however has to be the rudest man I’ve come across in a long time with absolutely no people skills. Our table was booked for 12 and we all attended on time. We waited 2 hours for our starter to come out by which point my baby was very grumpy as he was so hungry. We were very polite about it despite this now meaning that myself and my husband couldn’t enjoy ourselves as the kids were hungry. My husbands desert never came out! By the time we were served our starter main and desert 4hrs had passed! The food was nice but was let down by the service! When we went to pay the owner told us that we had paid £75 short which was impossible as it was a set menu and we had double checked our calculations. He then told me that he was going to call the police and instructed a staff member to call the police in front of a pub full of people and my children (baring in mind this is Christmas Day)! Trying to calm down the situation we went back through the bill to see that he had overcharged for all the children which was the cause for the £75 missing. This took about 30 minutes of very embarrassing behaviour from the owner threatening us with the police when we had just spent the best part of £1000 in his establishment for him to overcharge us and then try and bully us into paying extra. Safe to say we will never...

Where should I start? How did this place got 5 stars? A 'Black Pudding Stack' was tasty but the sliver of Black Pudding had been deep fried and was crispy, not good and spoilt, what should have been a tasty dish.

What a disaster! Food was overpriced i.e. Fish Pie at £11+ contained a couple of prawns, chopped up, a small amount of mackerel,no smoked salmon and was dry. The accompanying salad was a few salad leaves with grated carrot and a slice of cucumber, no tomato etc.

Big fish was actually a lot of batter & little fish, a tablespoon of mushy peas was given too. The so called 'Pulled Pork' was basically some dried up pork in a form of sauce that was supposed to have white wine in the mix, no taste of this could be found, it was just chewy. The 'Roast' potatoes had been deep fried too. The Scampi was fine, this only had to be thrown in the fryer. The cold ham and eggs was OK, but bland and had little flavour.

As for deserts, these were good, tasty and well presented, apart from finding a piece of the plastic ice cream container in one dish. We spoke to the waiting staff as the 'Manager;' was to busy cooking (Probably why the food was so poor?). The girls were really friendly and helpful and listened to our concerns, they reduced our bill by 50% and offered 20% off future meals, but we wont be going back.

This is the third time we have eaten here and only once had it gone well, there are better restaurants in the area, even without the so called '5' star award.

VERY...
