THANK YOU TO THE ESKDALE!!!! We can't thank The Eskdale enough. We rather stupidly decided to attend a party in Danby and then Storm Arwen hit. And our minibus ended up coming down Castleton hill backwards in the snow. It was freezing, snowing heavily and we were stuck... until ...the owner of the Eskdale came out and offered us sanctuary. We had a 3 month old baby in our group and cannot say how much this meant to us. This place is fabulous. Its like a scene from a Christmas film; roaring fires, twinkly Christmas lights and the best stocked bar. It is also IMMACULATE. Its so clean I was not worried in the slightest if my bed for the night was their floor. The staff went above and beyond to look after us. We had steaming cups of tea in front of the fire while we awaited rescue. At 1.30am when the tow truck came the worlds best land lord even followed the minibus to check we got home safely. We will absolutely be visiting as a group again to sample some of the wonderful Murrays food ( head chef who very modestly admitted he has been on master chef). Thank you guys so much - Kirsty the lovely lady behind the bar, Murray the modest super chef, and the world's best land lord.

A good eatery, but left feeling disappointed about the bread. The good points first, fresh and seasonal menu, amazing waiting staff, well presented tasty food, really really good desserts. Onto the issues…. While the restaurant is clean and comfortable it doesn’t feel as premium as the food. My main issue was with the bread however. I ordered the bean burger and it arrived with stale bread. As a baker I look forward to the bread and this bap was at least 3 days old and should never be served. When our server asked about the food, I said it was delicious but was very disappointed with the bread (that I didn’t eat). She said she’d speak to the kitchen, but then never provided any feedback. When speaking to the owner at the end he dismissed this by saying it was because they toasted it. This is not ok, do not gaslight your customers! The sourdough bread for the bouillabaisse was also very stale. A good restaurant knows when not to serve food and change a menu, and it is never a good idea to gaslight your customers. Overall this left us a bit annoyed. I personally don’t think this restaurant lives up to the hype, but it was still a very nice meal. I wouldn’t return however, or recommend.

May Bank Holiday. Just been to the Eskdale for a lovely pint of Ryedale Rambler & some excellent, very moreish, tasty, Sriracha buttermilk chicken wings, chips and halloumi fries... (heavenly). Under the gazebo with a blanket on our knees, this was a magnificent way to have a treat on a rainy Bank holiday. Three cheers for the Eskdale & crew! And roll on when we can be inside and try more of Murray Wilson’s amazing food alongside great beer. ... and genuine friendly good service in an amazing location. And had to post an extra visit comment today in August after a fantastic three course Sunday lunch of cured monkfish starter, roast lamb main and soufflé with chocolate orange blossom sauce and rum ice cream.... the sort of food one would love to find and here it is. Murray does it again with a flair for flavour and presentation.. cured monkfish is our favourite starter so far & we’ve liked them all. Similarly the soufflé is magic! And the roast lamb was flavoursome & so tender. Very happy to be at The Eskdale again, Kirsty & Marcus and the team , Murray, Leah and Kate today, Nell on other days, make us very welcome. See the photos of today’s lunch!

Following our first visit (entry below) we've been back many times and have never been disappointed. The food is excellent everyone is friendly, helpful and welcoming. The beer (Yorkshire!) is good as is the wide range of wines and spirits. The large beer garden is developing all the time and work is soon to start on an additional restaurant area to the rear of the building. Whether you're calling in for a top notch meal or just for a drink (or three) you'll be made welcome and well served. Highly recommended!

Earlier review. . . Recently reopened after change of ownership and extensive refurbishment. Draught beer and food are excellent. Beer and spirit prices comparable with other pubs in the area. Food a bit pricier but operating at a different level. We've already eaten there three times and it's all been top notch (or should that be 'nosh'?). Attentive and welcoming service. Car park and large beer garden. Only pub in the area serving food and drink all day, all week at this time (subject to weather, etc, during current lockdown measures - though it's also one of only two to offer tent/marquee cover). Well worth the visit (we've made about half dozen so far) and thoroughly deserving of support as an excellent 'new venture'. Can't wait to get inside for the restaurant...

We had been aiming to go to the Eskdale for quite a while but lockdowns and life just got in the way. finally, we managed it and was it worth the wait? Absolutely!!!|This is a place that really gets hospitality. From the comfy leather sofas where menus were brought and drinks offered to the well spaced and roomy tables it could not have been more welcoming. The staff were really welcoming and helpful without being obtrusive. Very knowledgable about the food and wine on offer with a clear description given with every course.|And the food… ?|My wife had the mussels as a starter and they were generous and lovely with the shrimp crackers in a Thai inspired sauce. My cured mackerel in a dashi broth was quite simply superb. Mains were local chicken breast for my wife and a ribeye steak for me. both cooked perfectly and full of flavour. The triple cooked chips and Hasselback potatoes accompanying these are a thing of beauty. Worth a visit on their own account. We shared a pudding. Blackberry cheesecake is too prosaic a name for the gorgeous concoction that had both of us wishing we had ordered one each (or two or even three). Coffee to finish and a very reasonable bill completed a brilliant evening. Definitely...
