We wanted somewhere new to meet as a family and celebrate a relative’s birthday. We had driven past the Farmer’s Boy on a regular basis, but had never been there, so decided to give it a try. We were so pleased we did. What a great experience.
The food was really good - it was a Sunday so there were 5 or more options for a roast dinner, but which also could be ordered in different sizes. The portions were extremely generous so no-one went hungry! The optional Cauliflower Cheese (extra cost) could easily have been shared by four as a side dish. In addition to the roasts, there was a good selection of fairly traditional pub food, including liver & bacon and fish & chips. The pudding selection was also good and again the portion sizes were generous.
The service was excellent with very polite, engaging and cheerful staff and the environment was clean, tidy and well maintained. We really enjoyed our visit and, if the number of people coming and going during our time there is any indication, it is a very popular venue with the locals.
One interesting element I have not seen before was the copious number of board games available to play whilst visiting. Our table had a Bond themed Trivial Pursuits game which we enjoyed whilst waiting for our food.
Overall, for six of us, the cost was just over £150. This was for two courses and a drink, and was very reasonable given the generous portion sizes. We’ll definitely be going there again and would highly...
Read moreNice looking pub with a great selection of games and drinks. However the staff need a lesson in customer service. We were not greeted when we arrived. We asked if there was any food on that was not a roast. I was told ‘yes on the specials board’ when I said I couldn’t see it was told ‘right in front of you’ then realised her mistake and said ‘oh that’s the dessert board, there’s a specials board somewhere’ then walked off. I went up a second time and asked the second staff member, she said ‘yes but not bar snacks’..not that I asked about bar snacks. Then again she mentioned the specials board but no help on locating this mystery board! Third time I went up they didn’t even look up and carried on their conversation saying ‘Stacey’s changing it’ then walked off. I felt like we were putting them out by being in there! It was not busy but they were acting harassed. We were looking forward to a nice lunch, game and a drink. After this experience I’ll never be back, not that they’ll care as the brunette barmaid (without glasses!on) gave us a sarcastic ‘byyyyye, thanks’ as we left. What an awful experience. All they needed to do was find a menu, way too much to ask clearly. We left and took our business to our local. Wish I’d read the reviews before as I see this awful customer service if a reoccurring theme that the management clearly have no...
Read moreParents are in the process of moving into the area so seven of us, including them, popped in for lunch as the place looked friendly, quaint and inviting. Unfortunately we missed lunch being served and asked what time the kitchen reopened so we could pop back for dinner. Came back a bit past 6pm, no one was eating at any of the dining tables, so we started looking for a table that would seat all seven of us. We were then rudely "greeted" by, I assume, the landlord (older gentleman with grey hair), who loudly and condescendingly told us there was a “booking system” for dining. So I walked over to him, at the bar, to book. He then snappily asked, “are you going to order any drinks?!” - What?! I have eaten at many good pubs and can honestly say I have never been spoken to in that manner before, it was almost surreal - so we decided to go elsewhere. My issue is that everything the landlord said could have been said in a polite way and all would have been fine, he would have got what he wanted and we would have got dinner, it was the insolent way he delivered every word. If they want to make such a big song and dance about booking first then I suggest they advertise such in and outside the pub, there is no mention of booking on their website. The only bitter part of...
