Great food, shame about the service! We had a table booked for 1.15 for Sunday dinner and we arrived 25 mins early. No problem, have a seat here in the bar, we'll get you a drink and you can have a look at the menu, while we get your table ready, promising start. Having sat at this table, next to the open door until 1.30 (40 mins), we were a bit cold and had empty glasses, my hubby managed to catch the eye of one of the staff. She asked if we had ordered, then asked what we would like but didn't offer anymore drinks. 15 mins later, the food arrived to our 'interim' table, (a high table with bar stools next to the open door, not somewhere I wanted to sit to eat). I explained we had booked a table, so were told we could sit at the next table along as it was now free. As we sat down she suggested we could go into the restaurant but we opted to stay where we were. The food had come out quickly once ordered and was lush, one of the best we have had, compliments to the chef!!! We were never offered another drink and we weren't offered a pudding, even when the plates were cleared away, we were asked if everything was OK but not if we wanted anything else! I think we were forgotten about and mistakes happen, but there was not one apology. We would have probably had a couple more drinks and would definitely have had a pudding if we had been offered. I think the staff need a little guidance, how much revenue is being lost simply because guests aren't offered another drink or asked if they would like anything else? I've still given 4 stars, the pub has a nice atmosphere and the food was soooooo good. I would go back for the food, hopefully the service gets better a the staff get...
Read moreWe are lucky to frequent the Pub and Kitchen, Cassop. Which is lovely with great food. We thought we would have the same if not better experience here in the pretty village pub. There were two issues for us the smell whilst on first walking in you get the open fire aroma. We sat unwittingly next the unlit fireplace which had not cleaned out so the smell was was pungent and all our clothes and our dogs fur stunk. Yes it's dog friendly (hence the 1 of the 2 stars). As for the food, i ordered game pie and we both agreed it was actually moo and blue which for me in the beginning was tasted rich and I did not realise until i had a fair amount to find it was all beef, which the dog later tucked into. The other dish ordered was chicken and leek pie, this had little by way of leek. (The 2nd of 2 is for the staff). Who when informed about out the game pie mix up suspension, very politely went to enquire with the chef and returned with an explanation as to how it could have happened. She offered us another drink by way of compensating, we declined as one drink was barely half way down and I was driving. We then answered her next question "would you like a dessert?" With a yes, both ordered the apple crumble and both received a dish of little apple and a lot off digestive biscuit crumbs, not crumble at all just biscuit crumbs! Needless to say we put the put the Christmas dinner flyer back and left £40 lighter and very disappointed with the food. So if you want to take your dog with you for a pint in a lively pub you will enjoy The Farmers. If you want the same experience with a meal too, get yourself up too its sister the Pub and...
Read moreA great quirky village pub with great food. We went for the Tuesday Special night. Tuesday prices are a little cheaper not that it's expensive normally. The menu was spot on, not too lengthy, meaning you actually get freshly cooked food. The atmosphere is always great, the decor is definitely very querky in a joyous way. There's an outside eating experience with eatery sheds but at this time of the year, I'll stick to indoor dining thanks.😊 we were a group of 4, with two of the party being village residents. For starters 3 had the Bubble n Squeak served with a soft egg & the fourth went for the Cornbeef Hash. Both a bit of a twist on the traditional, both delish! For main 2 went for the 10oz Rump Steak (£5 addition) & the others went for Chicken Parmo. Both dishes nicely cooked, the steak came as exactly requested Medium Rare. Here's where we get to quirky again, the choice of wine is basically what's been on a good deal at the wholesalers, so don't expect an extensive choice. However because they've been bought with cost in mind, the prices reflect & the wines on offer are never extortionate & can be way, way nicer than you could anticipate for the cost. We had 2 bottles of an excellent NZ Sauvignon Blanc & a superb bottle of Argentinean Malbec both of which I would've expected to be twice the price in a fancy Durham foodie restaurant. The meal was rounded off with Sticky Toffee Puddings & apple crumble. The staff were very friendly & efficient. All in all a cracking night made even better by a very short walk...
