We have tried The Fishbourne a few times in the last couple of years. We love the location, the bar has been nicely decorated, but sadly we have had one excellent meal and two very mediocre meals. Our most recent trip confirmed to us that we will not be going back. The Pan Roasted Garlic and Herb Crevettes with Asian 'Slaw promised so much. I am not convinced about the freshness of the the prawns and the 'Slaw was oily and frankly unnecessary. Let the food sing, just lemon would have sufficed. The Hake Fillet with Petit Pois la Franchise and Hollandaise was fine from the ‘special’s board’, but the Buttered Poached Chicken with Nduja Risotto was disappointing. The chicken was dry and the risotto was stodgy and lacked seasoning. Maybe this is an ambition dish for a pub to do. I also feel that £9 for a desert is on the high side. This is the same price as The Hut in Colwell Bay charge! On a previous visit the starter we had was so good that on the second visit a couple of days later we ordered it again and it was completely different and definitely inferior. The pub was quiet but service could only be described as fine, but not memorable, and we certainly didn't feel valued. Very little interaction, recommendations, or acknowledgement of choices, all important to a customer. To be kept waiting to pay because you were stocking the bar was poor. Sometimes I think pubs try to make menus too complicated - keep it simple and let the key ingredient shine. Front of house staff need to be make customers feel valued and special. Sadly we will not be returning.

I was a little disappointed in that I sat down with the menu and looked under Mains and did not see any fish dish. I called a passing waiter over and said I can’t find a fish dish and he showed me it was over the other side under Pub Classics and it was battered fish and chips. Not something I wanted and asked him what kind of fish it was. He went away and came back saying it was haddock. Not something again I wanted. So I looked at the Starters and order 2 fish dishes as my main meal. As I was waiting, the same waiter came past with plates of Sea Bream he announced as he put the plates down at the guests next to me. THATS WHAT I LIKE and prefer. So I asked him how come they found the sea bream. It’s on the Specials Board!! Ok you could say I should’ve asked if there was a specials board but if the establishment is wanting to sell more meals off their menu, I would expect the waiter to have told me, especially as I was enquiring about what fish they serve. However, the size of the 2 starter dishes were a large portion, which is a nice surprise, each a meal in itself. Other than not being fully informed the restaurant is well patronised and the plates of other guests looked well presented too. Nice decor inside and there is outside seating. I arrived at 2:45pm for lunch and the restaurant still had a few tables busy. Tables were already booked for the evening meals.

A Great Public House With A Great Selection Of Pub Food & Specials, With Traditional Ales & Beers. A Lovely Location, Nestled At The End Of The Fishbourne Ferry Port. Friendly Staff & Great Interior Decor With Warm Ambience. We Had Dinner, Starting With Soup Of The Day, Potato & Onion, Which Was Great Accompanied By A Fresh Thick Slice Of Bread. We Followed With Fish N Chips & Scampi & Chips, Both Lovely Big Portions & Cooked To Perfection... The Chips Were Amazing & Onion Rings Were Nice & Crispy! All Washed Down With A Local Mermaid Gin & Coast To Coast Pale Ale & Some Island Roasted Coffee To Finish. Overall A Great Pub Food Experience With Great Fresh Grub & Great Portion Sizes, Friendly Accommodating Staff & Nice Holley Nautical Decor! 👍👍👍

BEWARE

We stopped here as our last meal before catching the ferry home. We parked, tight manoeuvring but successful. We entered and were seated by a lovely waitress. A light lunch, pizza, very tasty, followed. We paid, at the table and went on our way. Our much needed break to the IOW had been lovely.

Move on 10 days and we receive a nasty reminder of our visit to The Fishbourne in the form of a parking fine, £100. We hadn't displayed a permit. What permit? We contacted The Fishbourne, short shrift, we are one of many, they can't do anything. Then we read reviews, OMG, we are not alone. They said there are signs. We didn't see them. Not one. We never went to the bar where they say the iPad is, it was waitress service.

I give The Fishbourne 4 for food. It was okay. Although we thought the waitresses were lovely, at the time, we now realise they hold the key. All they needed to say, to 2 pensioners, was ' have you registered? 3 words would have meant that a light lunch wouldn't have cost us £60, if we pay without appealing, or £100 if we say, please look at how wrong this is to a company employed by The Fishbourne.

My thoughts. This pub know that they don't have to rely on repeat custom from locals. Their income is from customers, like us, who are just leaving the IOW, possibly never to return. I'm surprised the Tourist Board don't highlight this issue and place a sign as you approach the pub. Where 3 hours before catching the ferry I was so happy, had enjoyed our visit so much, and in my mind the Island was wonderful, 10 days later I have a nasty final impression.

Just 3 words from the waitress would have made so much difference. To make it worse, we have her a...

Upon arrival there were four tables in the sun and one in the shade, even though we had reserved a table they made a huge deal out of the fact we wanted to sit in the sun instead of the shade; even though there were many tables and we had made a reservation. When we ordered our food we requested one standard beef roast dinner, one large beef roast dinner and a medium-well done steak with chips. Once it arrived we were handed a medium chicken roast dinner, a raw steak and a standard beef roast. We politely asked for the large roast beef we originally requested but decided to not make a small deal about the steak. When the roast beef arrived, the meat was red, completely uncooked and was a standard size, not large like we were paying for. We then called them over through their machine and no one arrived for forty minutes to check on us. However we stood up and approached them after a while and explained the one meal was cold and raw and was not a large as it was the same size as the standard beef roast the other person at our table ordered. At last we finally had the correct meal brought to the table but they had to eat by themselves as the other two had finished their meal by this point. We asked for our bills and they made a big deal about us splitting the cheque amongst ourselves, we just wanted to pay for our own food and drink... We then paid for our meals and when we asked for a receipt they didn’t even know how to print it off for us. The staff made us feel awkward and uncomfortable for their many mistakes, making us feel like it was our fault that they clearly didn’t know what they were doing. Needless to say, we won’t be coming back, this place is...

We came and ate at this pub at the end of July with friends. 3 cars in car park. We all put our number plates in the tablet. 2 cars were ok but one received bailiff letter with a fine of £170 about 8 weeks later. No previous correspondence was received from Creative Carpark, the company the Fishbourne inn has asked to manage the parking, and no chance to appeal at this late stage. We called the manager Dave, who seemed a little willing to help but just referred us to the company and provided an email address. We wrote to them that we were customers and have a receipt but they do not reply at all. Now a final letter has been received from the bailiffs and with great anger we have given in and paid that totally unjustified fine. Our health is more important than going through the stress of pursuing this any further. ||Dave, when you read this I hope you feel proud of what you are doing to many customers and locals in the community. Read the reviews of Creative Carpark and their actual company Civil Enforcement Ltd. They are described as criminals scamming innocent people. ||Also read the reviews you are getting now where so many locals have been caught out. Maybe the Island Echo will be interested in the stories of the victims of the unethical practices you have signed up to! We are a close community and do t need to be treated like that. You can’t wash your hands of it and hide behind the parking company. ||I live on the IOW and will never visit your establishment again and will discourage others to do so as well. I truly hope your business will suffer until you change this ridiculous set up....
