Our experience at the Five Bells in Dunstable for lunch was nothing short of a disaster. Despite our simple order of a burger for myself, my son, and the confit duck leg for my husband, we were left waiting for an unbearable amount of time. The couple next to us had already finished their entire meal, including drinks and left before we even received our food. When we inquired about the delay, we were met with a polite but empty apology and the promise that our food was on its way. However, 15 minutes later, we were still left hungry and frustrated. It was only after another inquiry that we were casually informed about a problem with the fryer by the waiter, which was apparently the reason for the delay. As if that wasn't bad enough, my 3-year-old son was understandably getting a bit fractious. It was only after my husband expressed his annoyance that we were then informed by the owner about an issue with the oven, leaving us feeling as if we had been lied to and deceived throughout our entire experience. The fact that our food finally arrived, with my burger being served cold, did little to salvage the situation. The owner's complete lack of care and their cavalier attitude towards our dissatisfaction will ensure that we never set foot in this establishment again. It's a shame because the place may look nice, but the lack of honesty and customer service ruined any potential for a...
Read moreI usually never leave negative reviews, but honestly, I didn't have a good meal here.
We booked to sit outside on a Sunday, and I must say, the garden was lovely with lots of space to play for the children and the pub inside looked cozy, as we were served quickly.
BUT I had numerous issues with my meal: the beef was stone cold and 40% fat the pork belly gave my husband a very poorly stomach, and no one else had the pork so it was likely that. The roast came with ONE roast potato Almost no gravy, until we chased down the waitress and asked for more At no point did the waitress come back and ask if our meal was okay. the waitress did not bring enough sets of knives and forks for the amount of people in our party (by 3) There were no sauces offered with our meal, like horse radish/mustard etc. The beef was not served with a steak knife, so was difficult to cut the spring greens were overly peppered (personal preference, but it was strange enough to comment on) There was no turkey available, and yet it was printed on the paper menus?
The location and the garden, as well as the fast and friendly bar service are the redeeming factors of this pub. It truly is beautiful and I would recommend for everything but the food.
Perhaps it was just because we were in the garden, but I was very disappointed after the Five Bells came highly...
Read moreIf the food had been nearer to half the price, then it would have been fair value. The Yorkshire pudding was 3" high and only just saved from burning. The cabbage and carrot, were scarce and the latter - overcooked. The chicken was somewhat dry and followed the common, and labour-saving practice of serving half a chicken as described. The extra effort required by the customer allows sufficient time for the whole dish to cool all too quickly. Consequently, the whole dish rapidly cooled rendering a substantial portion inedible. I should have removed chicken from its bone, etc. first, then asked for the whole dish to be reheated after fist removing the Yorkshire which may have been a step too far for the carrot. Amongst other reasons for dining out, there is the one that relieves the diner of meat preparation immediately prior to eating. I used to think that chefs were valued for that skill even in eateries such as this exemplar...
