We had a most exquisite meal here Saturday 16th March. The pub was highly recommended to us. Think āCountry chicā and ācottage coreā decor. The tables all had small vases of fresh flowers, sweet little salt and pepper grinders, and recycled glass tumblers. V prettily done. Ooh, linen napkins, too! The nibbles menu is an excellent idea as my husband and I find a starter, main and pudding too much these days. The landlady was friendly and welcoming, and the staff couldnāt do enough - attentive without being intrusive. Our waitress was intelligent, interesting and animated. We shared a dish of whitebait with homemade tartare sauce. The whitebait were done to perfection , as was our entire meal. They were very meaty little fish, and the tartare Iād like the recipe for. It was served beautifully on a little wooden board in a small pottery bowl. Our mains were sublime - steak, which melted in the mouth, and a beautiful plaice on the bone, served with samphire and new potatoes. All was plated up in a very attractive way. I love the way the sides were all brought on small wooden serving boards. Husband had a lemon meringue cheesecake served in a sweet little kilner pot. Lads, it was the bomb. Beautiful. Canāt recommend highly enough. We will...

However... The food was really disappointing, although beautiful in presentation. The roast was a sirloin which was very very rare (we weren't asked if we had a preference) but tasted burnt on the outside. The veg was barely cooked, I don't like over done veg, but the cabbage was raw, carrots were hard. The roast potatoes were a real disappointment, they were white and looked like they'd only been in the oven for a couple of minutes. The Yorkshire was massive, but overdone so mostly tasted charred. I did enjoy the cauliflower cheese though. 3 of us had roasts and said the same afterwards. They were really disappointing. Another party member had glazed ham, which was too salty to eat.
A real shame as the pub otherwise is really lovely. But at £20 for a roast dinner, I want my dinner roasted!
There is definitely potential here, and it could have just been an off day.
Car park is gravel so could be difficult to navigate a wheelchair over, but there were other street parking spaces at the...

June 18. It would appear that the owner now does as Well, was your best "locals" pub award voted by the locals by chance š, there were much nicer and friendlier pubs in the area.
Updated July 18. So it appears that they don't like you leaving a review unless it's a good one and reply with aggressive comments. We visited this pub for a family occasion back in 2016, there was about 15 of us and as said in my 1st review found the food and service Ok, a fair comment!, but there were a few locals sitting at the bar right next to us blatantly looking and talking about us in an unfriendly manner, they were also talking and joking with the bar staff who could see there behaviour!. It made an uncomfortable atmosphere for the occasion. So hence my review about the locals and with that your response is to be aggressive to my review, you obviously have no experience of customer service, I'm sure your pub has won best locals award but what use is that to The Tourist trade, we are not locals are we!!, I find your reply comments pathetic and you obviously have no regard for the tourists...
