Overcharged for starter and awful, reheated Sunday roast! Given that we had booked for 12.30pm, you would expect the food to be fresh. Unfortunately this wasn't the case at The Gate last Sunday. We ordered a sharer baked camembert and asked for enough bread for 4 people. We received said camembert, with 3 toasted slices of brown sliced bread, cut in half to make 6 pieces between 4 diners. Then, when the bill came, we had been charged 2 x £1 extra for two slices of bread. Do you mean to tell me the standard portion for a sharer camembert is ONE slice of toast? Then our roasts arrived. The beef and lamb were tough and almost impossible to cut. But worse still, for a 12.30 booking, our roast potatoes were clearly reheated, hard and almost inedible. I'm a keen cook and I know a reheated roastie when I see one! They must have been using up the potatoes from the previous day. Ugh. If I'd just been with my husband I would have said something, but we were 'treating' my parents who had chosen The Gate, so I didn't want to embarrass them for making such a poor choice so I paid and left. But I won't be...
Read moreThis is the second time we have visited this pub to eat and this time we had our daughter with us who is dairy intolerant. The lady serving us was really lovely and helpful checking with the chef what our daughter could eat. Her main was fine but when it came to pudding she asked for sorbet as it was the only option but it came out perhaps chocolate sprinkles on the bottom. When asked to replace it as she couldn’t eat the chocolate they simply ‘washed ‘ off the sprinkles and returned a very soggy looking 3 scoops of sorbet. There was still signs of chocolate too. Very disappointing when an intolerance has clearly been stated. The lady who originally served us replaced the pudding , properly this time and took it off our bill but I just felt frustrated that the kitchen staff thought it was acceptable to bring a customer a washed and scraped off sorbet and expect you to pay for it? Wait time for our meal was quite long too and with a little one in tow as well that was a little...
Read moreI have been coming here since I was a small child and have seen this place change hands alot. I used to bring my children, now in their 30s here too for the garden. My father's wake was here also in the private dining room. I hadn't been for some years, and didn't know the new owners but have started to come back here the last 6 weeks. The food is absolutely fantastic. A great varied menu and cooked, presented and served so well. Portions are very big. Prices are good. It has a lovely garden for families to the right. Some tables to the front with an outside smoking hut. Dogs are welcome and have dog biscuits on the bar. Children welcome and many are seen at weekends, particularly throughout the summer with their extended families and friends. Locals are lovely and welcoming, as are the owners and staff themselves. Plenty of indoor seating when when busy. Cosy in the winter with the log fire. Great place in a nice country setting....
